Better Post Preview

Posted by Jaesun Park, Software Engineer

Many of us preview our posts multiple times before we are satisfied with them for public viewing. Blogger in Draft now supports a new, improved preview feature that allows you to see how your post will actually look to your readers.

On the New Post page, click on the Preview button (this is a new button that we’ve just added), and you will see a new window open with the WYSIWYG preview of the post. This is how your blog post will appear to your readers when you hit publish, with the same format and style of your current Blogger theme.

Please note that the preview page does not automatically update as the contents of the post changes. To make sure the post looks OK after you've done further editing, you can refresh the preview page manually, or click the Preview button again.

Excellent...I was gearing up to write blogger an email asking why my preview panel was still stuck at 300px when its now 550px.

but.
this solves everything.

After weeks of wondering when Blogger would figure out that no, we don't like our previews in a little box that looks nothing like our blog (which completely forfeits the purpose of previewing in the first place), the feature is up! Can't wait to start using it.

Yes! I've been wanting this for a while. So excited! Little changes make huge differences.

I'm pretty stoked to see this. Many thanks, Blogger folks! Now, I just need something to write about to test it. :D

Good feature. Guess it was functional since last few days. Look forward to more awesome updates. Please also look into the matter of few templates hanging in IE. They seem to open well in Firefox but not in IE.

Cool idea. Unfortunately all I'm seeing in my preview pane is a blank page.

Amanda Kay said...

This is absolutely fantastic! Thank you Blogger team for putting this together =D

I have an immensely customized template in place for Blogger Buster and this works absolutely fine except for one teeny detail: the preview shows how the post will appear on the home page of my blog, not an item page. Not a problem for most ppl I know, but I use conditional tags to display content only on the home page...

Still, it's a tiny thing and tbh I'm thrilled to see this feature is finally in place. Thank you very much!

Thank you that is a big help:-)

Nice and much needed new feature! Thanks!

It looks great!
However I spotted a small problem with it :)
in preview, the new post, while not published yet, already has links at the bottom. They seem to actually be links to my previous article, but I see no reason why they should appear on a new post...

Ghosty said...

Awesome, I've wanted this improved, like, forever ago. Thanks!

Noticed it before seeing the new post about it. Was really a great surprise. Previous preview was very limited - now having it from edit mode is really cool.

Good job! Thx

Hi,

!!!!TO THE BLOGGER TEAM!!!!

I have two requirements:

1. If you care about the users opinion PLEASE reapply the old method of PREVIEW post and i'm sure if you want you can let the new method too, but the old method was really useful.

2. I'm not sure if you know, but the actual process to upload photo in posts is working very slowly or not at all. Very often I received message from Firefox or Chrome that say if you want to "stop" the script or "continue" (it's about the script that upload images on blogger draft). I chose "continue" but after the "upload" button appears it doesn't work (don't open the window to chose the photo).

Best regards,
Have a nice day!

This is a fabulous feature!! The other preview window was too small so thank you!! Now, if we could just get comment counters! :)

Schultzter said...

This is what I'm talking about - depth, not breadth. It's great to see Blogger working on improving existing functionality.

I wonder, how much of Draft is going to travel with Blogger when it becomes a Google Apps for Your Domain service?

Phoenix said...

Thanks! Although I haven't tried the new preview yet, it sounds cool! ;)

ramaraobobby said...

this new and improved preview feature is definitely useful as we can see how the post looks to the users after it is published. This new preview feature which doesn't automatically update as the content of the post changes and which need a refresh to preview further changes is exactly similar to the preview feature WordPress supports. Hope blogger is gonna support all the features of WordPress sooner or later.

Fantastic! Finally, I can test my CSS formatting before publishing the post.

Thank you Blogger team!

Now its time 2 change in blogger comment system.
Threaded comment system.
Or like reply options etc.

Chang Kim said...

@gxg -- In any case, none of the links on the preview page works. The preview page is for your preview purpose only, not viewable to other readers.

The things you do with Blogger In Draft like a Preview Button amongst other things are very helpful to me. I have a problem centering text properly and the preview button is a god send.

रंजन said...

thanks... its good.. waiting for new features....

Okok said...

Great feature when you have text around the photos, say pics alligned left or right, and you're never quite sure what it's going to be like until you publish and have to go back!

Now I see it wasn't only me! :D

Delta-Slider said...

Great update! That little box was starting to get to me! :)

Lu said...

Love it, love it, looove it! One problem I'm noticing, though: on a blog where I am an admin, the Preview works like a charm, but on a blog where I am a contributor (not an admin), I get an Error 403, Invalid security token. I'd love to be able to use this feature on all of the blogs I write for!

O Costa said...

I liked the new preview, kudos to all. But, why are links disabled? Is this intentional? I count on the preview to double-check the links on the post itself, I can't see why it should be disabled.

Chang Kim said...

@O Costa -- We basically wanted the preview page to be just a visual snapshot of the post and stripped out all functions, not just links. You can verify links by clicking on them in the post editor and look at the small layer that opens below the links.

I love the new Blogger in Draft, however i logged in today after a few days off..and my whole layout display is NOT how it should be, why would it have changed? for example, my pictures are set to the left now instead of centred, there is now a grey border around them all, and my justified text has reverted to left bound, in all my posts....can anyone help me get my design back?

also none of my picture links work anymore =(

I've been glad to have this, but I admit that I miss the old preview at times. It's nice to be able to just pop it open and get a sense of paragraph flow, etc. without switching tabs and having to reload. Is it possible to support both? Thanks!

Dr. Heckle said...

I love this feature! It really helps me so that I don't have to post and repost constantly when something doesn't look right!

Very good preview! Thanks!!

Mike, ESC!Cast Network said...

The new Preview is nice, but the giant overlay used over the entire preview page makes it difficult for me to verify links before publishing. The overlay, of course, "deactivates" all the links.

When previewing in the past, I could quickly roll over all the links in my post - as the user would see them - just to be sure things were looking good before making the post final.

Most importantly, though, I used to use Preview as a way to verify the link to my podcast file was working as I expected before Feedburner sucked it up and shot it out to iTunes. ;)

I do appreciate all the great changes found in Blogger in Draft though - especially Pages! Nice.

Awesome! Love this new feature.

I have a totally unrelated question. How can I edit the background image in Josh Peterson's simple layout to NOT tile and remain centered. I don't want it to repeat at all. I have a 1600 x 1200 image I want to use as a centered background.

THANKS!!!

Hi, today 11.6.2010 there is missing the Edit- option (Front page)after the update...in Buzz there is no Commentfield - therefore I am writing here...

My own post today is not updating to the readinglist in the Control panel.

Sorry my bad english :).

Nelson Muntz said...

This is good, but I think it would be better if we have two options. this one and the last preview option, which doesn't open a new Internet window, but just a miniwindow. I personally like the old one better!

dodoy said...

that was really great improvement specially like me using blogger format, i was once suffer on hard to preview my post because i make save first before i can see the view.. but now with preview show left side, so easy when posting. great work men... see you next improvement and more power to all blogger user.

Hillary said...

I LOVE LOVE LOVE all you are doing at Blogger...LOVE the new looks.

It runs a little slow and would be nice eventually to have everything customizable. (I would like to have my header centered on my page, for example, with the photo I upload; but with my template it is left side only.)

I'm having problems with my embeded videos disappearing in IE8. I saw that this was a problem that was fixed back in April, but I only updated my blog to the new template a couple of weeks ago.

Henna said...

wow.. thats a cool new feautre as one doesnt know how their comments would look once they are posted and one mistake can ruin the entire effect, with the preview being shown, its much more easy and time saving now!! good job blogger

There is a bug in this preview feature.

When you preview your post preview don't add
br tag to empty lines in your post.

Hence preview is not always same as your published post.

Drazick said...

Though I chose "English" in my language preferences I see the "Preview" ribbon in Hebrew.
Could you fix that?

Thanks.

David said...

It's nice - I've been using it awhile. But it's not TOTALLY WYSIWYG; seems paragraph breaks sometimes don't accurately reflect things. There are other small things I've noticed, just don't remember them now. But still, it's useful. I just ctrl-W out of it each time when I want to keep editing (I'm using Chrome, hence ctrl-W).

David said...

To Drazick (second comment up):
If you're using Chrome, check your language preferences in Options. If Hebrew is at the top of the list where Google decides which language it will use for it's tabs, etc. in its UI, then that's why you're getting this. (Note that this is a SEPARATE option from your primary language for things like spellcheck.)

I hope you we can have Retweet and Like Buttons and page views stat like what Posterous has.

see this http://blog.mixpanel.com/expert-interview-series-dennis-mortensen-open

and of course, anyone who has a Facebook or Twitter account can leave their comments by using these accounts.
