Pages come to Blogger In Draft

by Sean McCullough, Software Engineer

Update (1/21 @ 8:54am PST): We've temporarily disabled creating & editing pages. You can still view the pages you've already created. We will re-enable ability to create and edit pages soon.

Update (1/21 @ 9:32pm PST): Pages are back on.

Pages have been a top requested feature, and they are now available on Blogger in Draft!

Blogger Pages lets you to publish static information on stand-alone pages linked from your blog. For example, you can use Pages to create an About This Blog page that discusses the evolution of your blog, or a Contact Me page that provides directions, a phone number, and a map to your location.

You create a page similar to how you write a blog post. From Blogger in Draft click the Posting | Edit Pages tab, then click New Page. (Note: you can create up to 10 pages.)

Once your page is published, you can link to it from the new Pages widget. The Pages widget lets you add links to your pages as tabs at the top of your blog, or as links in your blog's sidebar.

In the Pages widget, you can decide which pages will have links, and in what order they will appear. You can also choose whether or not you want links automatically created for pages when you create them by checking or unchecking the box to the left of Add new Pages by default.

Finally, for those of you that have custom templates, your custom template may not automatically support Pages as horizontal "tabs". If you are familiar with HTML, follow these instructions on how to add Pages to your custom template.

Let us know how it goes in the comments!

Hello,

This is a feature that I need and use. Keep up the good work.

Out of curiosity, I noticed today that my individual posts will not render. The page renders everything except the title and text of the post. The / renders fine, but selecting an individual post from the blog archive will leave an essentially blank page. Is this related to this change in blogger in draft?

Cecilia said...

Oooh! Thank you so much for that! It was a feature I really liked over at Wordpress, and now I have to real reason left to move there (which I am sure you appreciate).

Can you give us details of the template PageType? How do we deal with PageType != item (which matches Static Pages now)? Duplicate all the functionality (hmm)?!

Víctor said...

Oh my God, At least...

Jasia said...

My page didn't render well. I had a vertical list of topics on my "new page" and all the lines ran together, even when I put a "break" tag at the end of each one. I previewed it in IE7, Chrome, and Firefox. No luck. :-(

strantzas said...

I tried copying the HTML from the blog entries I use as static pages and pasting them into these new "Pages" but the carriage returns don't carry over, making this practically useless for me as it stands. Hopefully, the issues are resolved soon as I've been waiting some time for this feature to be implemented.

Raju said...

Thank You Blogger Team for the awaited static pages.

This is great, but, I tried it on my blog, which has a customized template, and it screwed it all up. So I had to remove it. I would LOVE to have this capability.

This is a magnificent attempt. Long back when I changed from wordpress to blogger, the need of pages was one thing I was dying for. Thanks to blogger team for such an important addition.

John said...

I'll chime in with a 'me three'. The paragraph breaks aren't working for me either. But I am very thankful that pages are finally here, and look forward to this bug being fixed.

Bombchell said...

WOW! yay!

Melisa said...

Thanks very much for this new feature. I've been waiting for it since I moved from WordPress to Blogger.

Raju said...

The paragraph breaks does not work for me too, maybe we have to wait a little longer. But I will surely refer this to my readers.

John said...

Figured out the paragraph breaks!

Under Post Options - under Edit HTML Settings "Convert newlines" is the default for every post.

Change it to "Ignore Newlines" -- and the paragraph breaks will not be removed.

I think it's still a bug that the paragraph breaks are being converted into linebreaks, but there is a way around it until they fix it.

Zebhi said...

I love this changed...

:D This feature is absolutely great.

Thank's...

Rob said...

Paragraphs not working for me either and I tried it with a blogger template, ie not custom.

Any reason for that?

Considering it shows as formatted well in the post editor, even in the preview box, it only mucks up when actually published.

Rob said...

John, a few comments above this one, thanks, that works a treat, wonder why that's like that as default?

Ludwig said...

Awesome!
Working perfectly for me.

It is a feature I've been expecting for quite some time.
Thank you, Blogger devs!

Huzzah! Stumbled into this today, promptly implemented it on a new blog (http://speaker.beckymccray.com/). LOVE IT!

I did have a problem with the widget. I think it was conflicted with something (the linkbar, maybe?) in my custom template from OurBlogTemplates.com. I ultimately had to go into the HTML and delete the pages widget. I'm sure with time these conflicts will get worked out.

Very happy to see this feature, and look forward to being able to manage more than 10 pages.

Thank you!

Found the following ... after entering all I have to use "ignore newline" or something to that effect when posting to get the spacing seemingly accurate.

HOWEVER, when going back in to edit page with more information everything has gone from two line breaks to 6 or 8 and I have to delete them but remember to check the "ignore ..." option again or everything will become just one paragraph.

I am sure this is something you are working on ... still needs some TLC.

New static pages is a feature I waited for. I followed the online instructions for a customized layout and it worked the first time. Excellent work Blogger dudes.

Can you extend the font and color tab to include the tabbed menu or post some HTML tips to help us modify it.

Sorry--we always ask for MORE.

Brad Farless said...

Thanks for implementing Pages, but they're useless if you can't use formatting in them. If I try to put anything on those pages, I lose all breaks between paragraphs. I tried turning off and on the convert line breaks thing and remaking Pages, but it's the same result.

So, until that works then there's no point. You might as well have not released Pages at all, because it still can't be used properly.

You NEED to have a plug-in for a auto spam comment blocker.

I don't like word vertification becuase it adds a extra step for readers on my site, which a lot don't like, so I get less comments.

There is many apps that block/delete spam comments. Some apps automaticly send spam comments to a separet folder.

Take Wordpress for an example. They have a plug in (for free) that sends spam comments to a seperate "spam" folder.

PLEASE ADD A FEATURE FOR SPAM COMMENTS! SPAM COMMENTS NOW APPEAR ON ALMOST ALL BLOGSPOT BLOGS!! THIS IS VERY-VERY IRRITATING TO ME, AND THOUSANDS OF OTHER BLOGSPOT USERS!!

I would say try getting this done AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Thanks a lot, and I hope this update happens very soon.

PS. I know this is not the right place to contact this department. I'm sorry, but Blogger doesn't have a support service (which I highly recomend... Wordpress has it...). So PLEASE send this message to the right department.

Thanks

Hey fellow bloggers!

I have a question which needs answering.

I run a site, on blogger, that has 5 million hits.

As you can imagine, the spam comments we get is tremendous! And we hate all the space that spam comments take up in our comment moderation section.

We don't like to turn on word verdifaction becuase our commenters don't like it, and we get less comments.

QUESTION:

Does blogger have a plug in for spam comments remover/blocker that sends spam comments automaticly to a different spam folder? I've tried searching but I can't seem to find it. I know Wordpress does, which I might move too if Blogger doesn't have it.

If not, is there any app/service that runs with blogger to stop/block spam comments? Like a program for spam comments that we can put in our HTML or something like that. ANYTHING will help!

Also, BLOGGER, YOU NEED TO MAKE A PLUG IN FOR THIS - THIS IS MANDATORY FOR ALL BLOGGERS - NOW, BLOGSPOT IS A TARGET FOR SPAM COMMENTS BECUASE THEY KNOW BLOGSPOT DOES NOT HAVE A SPAM FILTER!

Please, I hope a Blogspot employee reads this, or even if someone can send this message to blogger.

I'll keep checking this site daily, awaiting responses, if anyone can help.

Thanks

Adib said...

For those complaining about blogger's commenting system, you can switch it to the disqus commenting system by signing up at www.disqus.com. You can check out how I implemented it on my site. :)

Also, I agree with the annoying "p" in the URL. We should leave out the "p" root file.

I'm hoping the blogger staff would take into consideration classical templates, and stop "teaching" us to change to the new blog layouts.

Formatting is way off, or rather there is none at all - in preview mode all looks fine, go to publish the page post and BAM, all formatting is gone ... spent hours on this, giving up - the idea of pages is great if it works, otherwise why bother? I even did a cut/paste of text from Notepad, not Word, didn't work ... then did the same but in HTML edit mode, didn't work ... it eventually lines up just fine, but try to add a space in between paragraphs or topics, forget it, doesn't work - add a photo, text wrap is then impossible, and other text or captions are all over the place or in one solitary spot as if to say it won't play nice in the sandbox ... would be really nice if Google could fix this because everything else they create is awesome - waiting patiently for the 'engineer who could' ;)

Hi there, I have a problem with blogger gadget placement. I don't know why, but I can't re-arrange all of my gadget, it seems stuck & won't shifted with other (Layout -> Page Elements -> Add and Arrange Page Elements).

I have tried with other browser (with the latest version & beta version of Firefox, Chrome, Safari) and the problem is still exist. But when I using Opera 10.10.1893 & IE 8.0.6001.18882 I can re-arrange the gadget normally (works properly).

I don't know this problem comes from browser or from blogger itself. But I've reported this problem (bug) to them all. I hope this "bug" will be fixed soon because firefox & chrome is my favorite browser.

BTW, did anyone have the same problem with me?

Any ideas what could cause this?

Cheers, Natalie.

@[Bug?] Gadget Stuck! - I had the same problem and I found a very simple solution: you have to reduce the zoom of your page in order to see all the elements / gadgets (you can use "Ctrl" and "-" or search in the menu of your browser). This is great, but, I tried it on my blog, which has a customized template, and it screwed it all up. So I had to remove it. I would LOVE to have this capability.

Great! I just created a blog on blogger and because there were no pages, I was thinking about deleting it, and starting one in wordpress instead. The only thing I wish you would change is the templates and css. I wish you guys would make a section just for widgets. I have a wordpress blog too, and the only thing I dont like about wordpress are the templates, and the fact that it doest allow people to follow you. If it did, I would not get one on blogger. Cuz it sucks. Andc I thought google was an innovator.

It's awesome that Blogger now offers pages! It's a long-awaited for feature! :)

BOOO! I WANT MORE THAN 10 PAGES! I CAN'T FIT ALL OF MY WORK INTO JUST 10 PAGES? AT LEAST MAKE IT 20!

Here's a question: in the future will we be able to set Pages as our home page?

I think this has potential if you can have parent and child pages. In other words, giving the user the ability to create pages that are children of pages. THAT is enormous flexibility, but this is a good first step.

So, I go to 'Edit Pages'. I make a new page. I publish. I go back to 'Edit Pages', and the page shows up, there. I click on 'View', and I get this error:

Page not found
Sorry, the page you were looking for in the blog A Light in Darkness Shines does not exist.

Bug? Temporarily disabled feature? User error?

I would really like Blogger to implement the option that when we link to a URL in editor we have the option to have that link open in a new tab. We don't want people navigating away from our blogs when they click on a link.

I am so glad to see this feature! My question is (and I hope I phrase it right)..is it possible to set up my "reviews" page so that when it is opened it shows all my posts that have the "review tag"..so all my past reviews only? Like if I were to do a search for "reviews" the page would open with only those posts with that tag. Hope I am making sense. Thanks in advance for the help!

Ya know what I think? THIS IS JUST AWESOME! I have been waiting for this for a while... Now my blog, (www.computopiahacks.blogspot.com), will greatly fruit from it!

Also, is the 10 page limit temporary? It would really ruin the whole thing if you could only post 10 pages...
