Autosave and Automatic Date and Time

We’ve recently added two new features to the post editor on Blogger in draft: autosave and automatic date and time.

Autosave is a feature we’ve had for a while on the old post editor, and it does what you’d expect: automatically save your draft posts when you pause in your typing. We’ve brought the same convenience and safety to the new post editor.

With automatic date and time, your posts will now be timestamped with the date and time that they’re published, not the date and time when you first opened the post editor (as has been the case). You can of course still explicitly set the date and time by opening Post Options and switching to Scheduled at instead. Once a post is published, it will keep its date by default, even if you go back even if you go back to edit the post and re-publish.

I thought I saw something like this in Blogger yesterday although I was using gChrome (which has been giving me "weird vibes" lately) so I was not sure.

:-)

PS

When is spell check coming? And video uploads! Must have video uploads in Draft! ;-)

"Autosave is a feature we’ve had for a while on the old post editor, and it does what you’d expect: automatically save your draft posts when you pause in your typing."

No, it automatically saves my draft posts even when I HAVEN'T paused. That makes my cheap 2006-vintage computer freeze up every so often and force me to wait before I can verify what I've typed. Not complaining about the feature itself, as I could have used it last year, just saying I do have a bit of an issue with it.

And yes, autosave has been active off and on for weeks now.

That's nice -- now what's up with 3rd party templates that used to run fine before these recent changes? There's a mess out there... and many unhappy users.

Hi, Blogger Team,
I found a problem that if I post in FIREFOX, and when I edit this post again in CHROME, I will see many "undefined" words in the compose mode of the Blogger in Draft editor. And I found the "undefined" mark always be the " " when I saw them in Edit HTML mode.
I have a firefox of version 3.1b2, chrome of version 2.0.162.0.
Could you see if this is a bug of these browsers or of blogger editor?
Thank you very much!!

Improbulus said...

Great that you're finally addressing the issue of "old" dates on draft posts, ta - but for me it's just not working. See http://amagicalsheep.blogspot.com/ test blog - I tried with a test blog (fully Layouts enabled etc), via both Blogger in Draft and the normal way, and both posts still published with the date that the post was originally *created*, not the date published. Is there an option I should have turned on? I couldn't find one. Thanks!

Right, I've worked it out. Not only must you create in Blogger in Draft and publish via Blogger in Draft, you mustn't do any intermediate edits of the post in non-Draft Blogger with the Keep Current Time script enabled, or else it won't work.

Thanks for Autosave & published timestamp. I also need separate 'Trial Publish' & 'Final Publish' functions before a post is sent to the world.
Save/Preview are not enough.

My eyes aren't young & enlarged text on the published page is easier to see where corrections & changes are needed. Tonight 3 versions of a post were sent out between 6:13 & 6:29 p.m. before I realized posts Published in Draft are not held until signed out. A PIA for subscribers!

I continue to learn about blogging & appreciate all you do to make it easier for bloggers. Blogging makes drilling for facts & cutting through 'nonsense news' a joy to keep my busy old clients, family & friends better informed.

Thanks for changing it to automatic date and time. I've been hoping that would be changed to.

I am editing in Blogger, not sure the difference between that and blogger draft. But when I publish my post it is publishing the time at the time my forst draft was saved, or maybe when first opened the editor. Like last night i began a post, saved a draft and posted this morning. It posted the time as 10:45 last night. Any help here? My solution was to copy paste into a new post. But that deems to be the long way. How cna i get the time to be when i publish the post, not when I saved the draft?

Internet Marketing said...

Thank you for this new feature. I usually write rather long posts and the autosave feature did already save my life:) While autosaving, I also like the particularity that if a tag is broken, it will alert me right away. More new features please. I'm lovin' it!

Ah, that's why my latest posts have been messed up. Half the time I use ScribeFire to post and I prefer to do some font and formatting changes to parts that get auto-added after posting. Sometimes I forget and publish before making the adjustments. This has led to posts with date/time stamps different than what I wanted. I'll just have to remember to make all changes before I publish or else explicitly set the date and time from inside ScribeFire.

Overall, though, the change is a Good Thing®.

Why don't you "release" the main features already!? The "create post" page is obviously much better in draft, why would anyone want to stick to the old version?

And you're aware that even if draft is the default mode, after you click on the little pencil icon it returns to the old mode for editing right?

I think that's pretty annoying.

I like blogger-in-draft. I provides many options.

But there are few clitches that 'tee' me off at times. (1) No spell check and (2) this week for reasons that I don't understand.. I am having problems downloading pictures (saved on my computer) to my blog. Never had that problem before. Getting error messages. Again, this has not happened before.

This is apparently only happening with blogger in- draft; because on my other sites, I am having no problems downloading the same pictures.

So whats's causing this problem? Blogger experts please help me to correct this. Postings on Manchester Square without photos simply does not work. Could somone check to see what's causing the problem? It's not coming from my end.

That said to all the female bloggers out there--This Sunday, have a "Happy Mother's Day"!

My post scheduling has not been working for at least a week now.

I usually write all my posts a week in advance, schedule them and they post when they're supposed to. Not anymore. Sunday last week my post date wouldn't change no matter how many times I changed the date and post on the Monday.

It only wants to post on the day I started writing the post unless (like what I did this morning) I copy the HTML and paste it into a new email at the time I want to post.

Obviously this is crazy and is wasting LOTS of time.

Here's where I wrote about it.

Dear Sirs, Blogger.com is a great site for publishing articles for common people. I have a great suggestion for blogger.com. You show 'Profile views' in blogger.com profile of a user which tells the user how many people visited his/her profile. My suggestion is blogger.com users' must also know how many people visited his/her individual articles so that users will know which of his/her articles are more viewed by the public.

Blogger in draft certainly is an improvement . However it does not have spellcheck which can be a bother at times.

I cannot change the date and/or time of a post because I get a time format error.

STEPS:
I use the Updated editor.

When I create a new post and then go to "Post Options" and select "Scheduled at", it displays the current date and time by default in this format:
"Scheduled at
2009/09/19
1:18 PM"

But when the post autosaves a few seconds later still in draft, the default "1:18 PM" part is automatically indicated in RED and it gives this warning message "Illegal post time (format is: hh:mm AM/PM)"

So there is the first problem in Blogger, it displays the wrong format by default because it must be hh:mm and it displayes it as h:mm without me touching it. I then manually change it to 01:18 PM to comply with the hh:mm PM format in the error message. But it doesn't work, it still gives the same error message.

I then tried 3:15 PM, 03:15 PM, 15:15 PM, it doesn't make any difference, it simply will not accept any manual date format I enter! If I then select "Automatic", only then will it save the draft further and can I eventually publish the post.

Surely this must be a bug in Blogger, since the error message is displayed without me even changing the time format? The time format is clearly already in the correct format anyway.

I actually want to change the DATE of some of my posts and backdate them, to make them disappear from the top of my blog but every time I click on "Post Options" and select "Scheduled at" and change the date, it gives me that TIME format warning again. It then does not want to save the post at all, until I revert it back to "Automatic", then it saves it to the current date and time and only then can the post be Published.

I therefore have no ability to change the DATE of posts, because of the TIME format problem, preventing me to save the post!

Any solutions to this problem? Surely I must be able to manually change the date and time of my posts?
