Over the last few months we've gotten a lot of feedback and made a number of improvements (we now support very large blogs!). We think it's just about ready for prime time.
Please help us out once more by trying Import / Export on Blogger In Draft.
- How to use Import / Export (note: You'll need to export your blog before you import it)
- Report issues with the feature
- Currently we only support importing Blogger blogs. We don't yet support importing from WordPress, Typepad, LiveJournal or any other blogging platforms.
- Before importing a blog for the first time, we recommend that you create a new, throwaway blog to import into so you get a sense for how the process works. Once you’re comfortable, import into your public blog.

This looks great. It would be even more useful if i can export all gadgets. (Excluding template)
I already tested it and its doing a great :) , kudos .
What i am worried about is : THe Custom domain feature is so buggy , i mean yest i did some changes and my custom domain started showing 404 error , it costed me thousands of readers !
THere are so many features that are missing , though importing and exporting is a great feature and a must have too , please dont tell me that THIS IS IT ? You have lot of work to do :)
Looks Great! Something I have been waiting for so long to be delivered by Blogger team. Now allows me to export all my posts as well as comments for storage and backup. Gives a sense of security definitely. Thanks Blogger team.

I do not know what is the problem. when I press the Download button on the export page, it do not work. and the page lead to the link erro page.
I used firefox and IE. result is the same.
while you have first launched this new feature. and I tryed it, and failed.
But the foolish thing is, if I use a proxy I can download the xml file (only posts, no comments). and I can upload (or import) it to new blog.
Does this feature have a regional limit ? (I'm in China)
-thank you
*******
There is another thing to tell you :
the reaction feature will not work on customized blog templates. it will appear but is not saving the reaction rusults. you can choose a reaction, and the number will grow. but when you refresh the page, it will disappear, the result is still 0 !
another problem:
Blogger provides a feature in the layouts page that named convert to default template. but I converted. and customized teplate can not be converted to as it originally been. why ?
I could not use the reactions feature on my old blog which the template is customized. and I could not convert it to as it orignially uncustomized been. so I exported all of my posts and uploaded it to a new blog. and pick the old URL to new one. but what I lost was :
1. many of the posts lost their original URL. and search engines lis leading to a erro page. This did not accured on the posts which have a Latin Script Title.
2. I lost all of my comments.
3.I lost all of my seach engine results.
4.It braught a dreadful mess to all of the inside links.
for what ? for just a feature : Reactions Buttons !
My Blog URL is:
Baliq.BlogSpot.com
- thank you
good
Cool Sites...
Thank's for this info.
Did not work for me. I tried importing a huge blog, and it gave me an error. I've already submitted an error report using the link you provided.
I'll try it again now and see if it gets the same error.
Thanks for the feedback folks and keep it coming. We've already had a couple great bug finds from your reports!
@Rahul: we are actively looking into all the custom domain issues. We know there's been a lot lately. (Especially for Register.com customers). We'll keep you updated and we are sorry for the problems. And don't worry, Import/Export isn't the only thing we have up our sleeve. ;)
Well, I've imported everything, but the problem, now I have a ton of duplicate blog items, and there is no way to mass delete the duplicates.
This is a major bummer. It would be nice if there was a way to not import duplicates, or, select multiple items and delete them all at once.
i think i like it.... hehe...
I know wordpress allows importing of blogger blogs into themselves. I saw the feature while checking out their features (Don't worry I'm still with you ;p)
This is will quite helpful to blogger if you start importing from other platforms also...because a lot of people(whom I know) are repenting their decision to start on other platforms(no offense). Maybe this will be their second chance ;)
So do start importing from other platforms.
PS: I'd like to second that duplicate post import problem
Hi everyone,
I think this feature deserves a launch that will pave way to its integration in the regular Blogger.
I myself have successfully done the exporting and importing blogs within Blogger.
You may want to check out my post about it.
I would like to be able to come back to blogger from wordpress. I agree alot of folks have made the same mistake and want to come back to blogger.
If wordpress blogs were importable then wordpress.com or .org would be in a world of hurt.
whao....geeks...
This is a great feature but unfortunately, when I needed it, I couldn't use it.
I used IntenseDebate (ID) comments on my blog and then removed it. ID allows exporting of comments to an xml file which I thought I'd be able to import back into my blog. Unfortunately, that was not the case. I thus lost what seem to be 1 month worth of comments. I plan to look at this in more detail when I have the time (so far I cannot tell why the file is not being imported). I wrote an article about my experience with ID and posted the xml file with comments within it, in the last text box. Could someone look into the file and tell me if there's a problem with it, or is the comment importing function disabled? Thank you.
I agree it would be nice if I could import/export not only blog posts, but also page elements/gadgets, and if I could import my blogger profile into the general google account profile.
useful article. it is easier now to import and export blogs.
Because I can't comment on older posts, I'll make the comment here:
First of all I would like to say that I'm grateful for the good (and free!) service Blogger is given me over the years. Hopefully this feedback is taken as constructive criticism to help it improve even more:
- The current editor has no image attachment button in the "Edit HTML" mode - going to "Compose" mode and back isn't good because it mangles the source badly
- The current editor doesn't seem to have an autosave feature, which is really useful
- It would be really nice to have a "publish draft using the current time" button / feature (instead of publishing it when it was created or having to manually edit the date/time)
- The current inline comment system is really nice, however as a technology (iframes, JS downloaded from 3rd party servers, etc) is a little bit of a hack (probably done so for architectural reasons) and it is hard to use with things like NoScript (also, it is hard to skin). Would it be possible to directly insert all the code as HTML in the template?
Best regards.
Yes I have tried this feature, even written a post, on hoe to use this feature to take frequent back ups of your blog's content and comments here:
Back up of your blog posts and comments
PS: I have myself tried this, and worked great, i used a new blog to test this, as suggested here.
how do i rearrange my postings pls?
the most important feature that blogger needs
is the ability to import wordpress posts, comments to blogger.
Yeah i guess i tried exporting the blog as my backup.
Would like to make a feature request.
I know that you can currently make a whole blog accessible only to blog authors, but how about adding the same functionality to individual blog posts. That way a blog could present both public content along side information only available to those that have the correct permissions.
This functionality could be made available with a set of radio buttons in the "Post Options" section of the edit page.
useful. in fairness..

Super useful. I always store a backup of my blog on my PC (doing an export almost every week). I like it very much :D.
I Tried It But All The Posts Did Not Get Imported
So I Guess You Guys Still Need To Work On It.
This is a nice feature.
I think it might be useful to export SELECTED blog posts, perhaps from the "Label Actions" interface on "Edit Posts". Currently, the way to accomplish this, I guess, is to export the whole thing, import it to the new blog, and then delete the ones you don't want.
I tried to export (as a back up) a blog that goes back to Jan 2006, and it didn't export all posts, only back about half way. Is there a size/date limit on this feature?
personally it's a great idea and should really have been done a long time ago. if i didn't hate wordpress as much as i do i would have switched to that because of the ease of importing between blogs onsite and offsite.
i'd rather not ever download any files to my computer. it would be cool to be able to export directly to a google doc's folder.
and i thought i saw something that would merge blogs, but i guess you have to download the xml files first. that's just too much work.
give us a button to copy a whole blog at once or little check boxes to choose several posts at a time. all of these options should also be on the "edit posts" page.
This is a good feature, and I have read that this is not supported, however what would be really smashing is to be able to Import Wordpress Blogs and other blogs from competing services.
It is an impediment to switch to using Blogger as a service if I have to jump through hoops to transfer my blog info. When I moved to Wordpress I could import Blogger posts with just a click.
Keep up the good work :)
You won't be able to support livejournal until you have an equivalent to their memories system. Memories are basically categories. And yes, the memories can be nested. Just like the nested categories I (admittedly) keep harping on about.
You would also need to support their post summaries.
I imagine it's the same with wordpress.
This is my number 1 most wanted feature. I just wish it would work. I have about 1220 posts with comments, categories and pictures. unfortunately, I can only save about have the posts and none of the comments or pictures.
My blog is big enough that the idea of losing everything worries me considerably. Please fix this and make it available asap!
Export worked fine for me - 6.6 megabyte file - but:
a. I wanted only a list of titles and URLs - not a full feed - no way to do that
b. Markup in the posts is escaped - but really should be unescaped and instead enclosed within CDATA
I concur with some of the other posts. This a very useful feature. It will be even better if I could import my Google Gadgets!
Although import and export is a helpful feature, I think an even more helpful feature would be to provide the capability to cross-post a blog post to more than one blog without having to copy and paste between blogs.
According to me this is the best feature of Blogger !
With this feature i have transfered my 5 blogs from blogger to wordpress....
CBSE
Thanx a lot again
When I click the Download Blog button I get a Not Found Error 404 message. Any suggestions?
Libre
are you working on supporting wordpress imports? i'm trying to move blogs from worpress to blogger and, well you know......i would appreciate any help in the meantime
thanks
I had success using the import feature, although I had to use XSL to format my custom blog XML to the correct format: http://blog.benpowell.co.uk/2008/11/importing-hacking-custom-formatted-blog.html
What I have found though, is that none of the old imported posts get linked to from Google searches. Does Google penalize posts that have been imported and post-dated, or is it just that the Archives aren't spidered?
Hi all! Thanks for the testing help. I'm going to close off comments on this post now.
Btw, in case you missed it, JJ released open source Google App Engine code for doing import / export with other blog platforms: read more
