Feature Updates and Bug Fixes for September 23rd

We’ve just released a few fixes to some of the features currently here on Blogger in draft.

Reactions gets some visual improvements, including fixes for display in IE 6 and overall spacing fixes. We’ve also tweaked the HTML and images to make it load a bit more quickly.

We’ve fixed an Import / Export bug that was truncating the export of comments. Also, importing scheduled posts will keep them scheduled instead of publishing them immediately.

We’re bringing the Embedded Comment Form closer to feature parity with the full page comment form by adding e-mail subscription for follow up comments. If you’re logged in, you can now also subscribe to comments without posting one of your own. We’ve also added improved color matching in the form for all browsers.

Excellent, thanks.

'Subscribe' on its own is rather vague: it makes me think of syndication feeds rather than e-mail, let alone Gmail specifically. The link colour on my blog is lighter than it should be too: pale-ish blue when my links are set to dark blue.

Hmm.. Blogger is getting better and better. Keep it up!

I tried the reactions but it does not show in my blog...What could possibly be the problem?

Is there anyway we can have users subscribe to a blog without having to log into their Google account? (as some people post comments with OpenID--like me!)

The ability to subscribe to comments without posting one of your own is a brilliant feature - good one. I use the embedded comment form now in my site and I find it has increased user interaction significantly.

This is GREAT!!! We are waiting for this very much! Thank you!

I use "☺,✔,★,♥,☀,☔,☹,✖,♻" as reaction options, but it's too long for my layout. They got cut off.

It's great to read that the comment form is almost complete. Thank you guys!

Curtis said...

I have been using embedded comments since you announced them. The comment subscription only makes it better.

Gabriel Monge-Franco said...

I agree with the above posts -- the word "subscribe" makes me think of RSS not e-mail notifications. Maybe you should call it "E-mail me when someone posts a comment" or "Notify me" or something along those lines.

It would also be really nice to have a similar feature for the entire blog, that is, if there was a button that users could click to get e-mail notifications when the author posts a new blog. Not everyone uses RSS aggregators or readers, so having an e-mail feature would be REALLY nice.

Didnt like this link "subscribe".

The reactions still don't work. You can click once on each one. Also it seems to be the same for ratings. After reloading the page there's no indication that you've already rated/reacted.

When are you guys going to continue work on the post labeling/categorizing system. The categories are GROSSLY underwhelming.

For example, it's nice that I can tag entries but I can't categorize them.

Say I had a blog about fashion. A CATEGORY would be shirts or pants. The LABELS could be colors or materials like cotton. See how this works? Then instead of a billion tags on the sidebar of the page, I can instead have CATEGORIES (or hell call them SECTIONS) on the side of the page.

See, shirts and pants can be the color blue but shirts cannot be pants and vice versa.

I have a livejournal account that I can't bring myself to get rid of because you guys still don't support this. Please, help me out here!

Hurray! Glad to know that the email subscription is now ready. Impressed for the prompt response!

BTW, is it better to make it a checkbox (like those in Google reader)? users may think that the current presentation (which is a link) will bring them to other pages. It may also be nice to mention specifically that it is to subscribe the commentsm not anything else.

Nice job anyway! 5 Stars!

I wish to be able to import or export some or all of the posts, but not the blog, its settings or its layout. Just the posts that I choose, or all of them if I choose all.

Also, importing of posts (XML file) from WordPress or Friendster (which exports in WordPress format) would also be a great feature for those migrating from them to Blogger.

And Friendster can import from Blogger (and many others) directly (no need to manually export/import as XML file to computer). Why can't Blogger do the same with Friendster, WordPress, LiveJournal and many others? Good idea right?

Hi,

Blogger is intersting for stuff.

But, still one of most important feature is required in blogger and that feature is customise the links of each and every post.
because of the so many problem arise in link.

For e.g. : If title in gujarati ya any other lan. then it automaticaly write post title as a defualt post. so other visiter can not search that post directly.

So, you have to improve that as soon as possible for all user.

Impressed, I am, to see Google finally adopt web2 aspects of its popular blogging platform.

allowing comments is a rarity across the googlescape, and blogger-in-draft deserve pats on the back for providing an avenue for reader feedback.

even though the last post is spam, reader comments are a bold step forward for blogger, and google.

Blogger/Google -- are you reading these comments? I have yet not seen a single reply yet (after nearly 80 comments).

Also, have you considered integrating AddThis or ShareThis into the standard templates? It might be easier (thus, better for your end users) instead of struggling with such limited and buggy subscribe/email notifications buttons.

see to learn said...

It would be great to let OpenID users subscribe to comments via e-mail. Some suggestions: 1) remember e-mail for each OpenID identity; 2) verify e-mail ownership at most once for each OpenID identity; 3) let OpenID users subscribe without posting a comment.

see to learn said...

4) remember OpenID authorisation after sending a comment for new comments.

What you need to do is add a spell check to the post create/edit thing. Until then I will be unable to use blogger draft and I REALLY like it's look.

Can you guys add a feature where we can subscribe to private blogs that we have permission to read? I like to read a friend of mine's blog, but since she has it set to private it doesn't give me an RSS/subscription option. I would like to be notified when she writes a new blog instead of having to check all the time. If you guys could add this feature that would be awesome!

STILL A BIG BUG in the Embedded Comment Form.

When you use IExplorer 7 and you post a comment for the first time in the Embedded Comment Form, you need always *two tries* to get your comment post. On the first try the form says in red letters: "Your request could not processed. Please try again."

Why this? How could it be solved? ATTENTION: It's a globally problem with IE7. This message came even when I wanted to post THIS comment you now reading. So I had to push the button "Post Comment" a second time. The word identification is an all tries always correctly been entered. It has nothing to do with it.

This is really a great improvement on the Blogger platform. I've seen others hack their templates just to get the comment form into their posts pages, fortunately for those who are using blogger draft, this will be a piece of cake.

Thanks guys from Blogger draft, keep on improving my(our) favorite platform! I wish I could work with you guys to improve on this platform, since I'm very impressed on how easy Blogger is compared to the "other" platform/s.

I've just started blogging a month ago, I'm an online webmaster so I'm always busy and not able to blog everyday. But sure thing is, I want to contribute something to Blogger. If there's anything I can do, please just visit my blog and let me know. It's http://mikeyhacky.blogspot.com.

I hope something like an official Blogger desktop app for publishing blogger blogs come up someday so we can have a software to do basically everything on Blogger except that it eliminates the element of a web browser. I think that would be really cool.

Again, thanks to all those who are working at Blogger Draft.

Moreover the embed comment form is still buggy. We need to press twice for "publish" before it does. Why is that happening?

And also reaction don't work in every blog, for exemple in www.bfax.gr I have chosen the reaction but they don't show up.

If I set Firefox browser options to 'accept 3rd party cookies' the embedded comment works. But I've heard that there is a privacy issue having that set as accepting 3rd party cookies. Without that 'checked' in my browser options, the embedded comment form does NOT work.

Is there a way around this? I've reverted back to the full page comment box.

I'd like to see three-column templates, please! There are the user-created ones, but if I want to use one of those, I have to re-add all of the widgets and reset any counters.

Also, on the reactions feature.. it'd be great if we could choose different options for each blog post to simply pertain to it, instead of having the same reactions to each and every post throughout the blog.

Alain-Christian said...

@Siobhan

You can't assign categories to entries with labels. At the very least you should be able to nest the labels. The labels system covers only the bare minimum.

Livjournal and Wordpress already supported this YEARS ago.

Even worse, the layout code doesn't allow me to hack that functionality in!!!
