New feature: Reactions

With our new Reactions feature, you can get one-click feedback from your readers. Think of it as a mini-poll for each blog post, or a flexible version of star ratings because you customize what options are available. We hope this will help your blogs get feedback from people who read your posts but don’t have enough to say to for a full comment.

To enable Reactions, log in to http://draft.blogger.com/ and go to your Layouts page. From there, click the “Edit” link for the Blog Posts gadget and then check the “Reactions” checkbox. You can edit the Reactions buttons by clicking "Edit" or clicking the buttons themselves, as shown.

You can customize the location of the Reactions within the post by dragging the preview around in the “Arrange Items” box. We’ve found that it looks best when it’s on its own line, but your mileage may vary.

You can customize the options and their label to match the theme and style of your blog.

Additional Notes
  • This is a Layouts-only feature. If you’re using a Classic template you’ll need to upgrade to Layouts to add Reactions.
  • The buttons should blend seamlessly with most blog backgrounds. Button backgrounds are a mostly transparent grey which should, we hope, coordinate with everything. The text and button highlight colors for the ratings are taken from the following skin variables:
    • Foreground: textcolor, textColor, mainTextColor
    • Highlight: linkcolor, linkColor, mainLinkColor
  • If you have customized your blog widget’s template you may not see the reactions. You will need to either reset your blog widget’s template or copy the Reactions code from a fresh template. Search for “reactions-buttons” to find the appropriate block of code.
  • A known issue: if you choose short words/phrases, it’s possible to enter enough options that the line of buttons will wrap (and not look very good). If this happens to you, you'll need to shorten your options or reduce their number.
What do you think? Leave a comment, or just rate this post!

I would like to see this same feature enabled for single posts as well as all posts.

I think it is a cool feature but what I would love to see is a way to post comments through the Google Reader instead of actually having to visit each blog.

Great to see blogger continuously improving, but I wonder if any if Reactions was one of the "wanted" features. How about integrated peek-a-boo/teaser posts? I think that has been requested a lot

The Captain said...

This is not showing up on my site after being enabled, has this happened to anyone else?
I might also mention that I have not been able to add or delete authors for over a month (but Blogger says they are working on that...).

Disregard previous post... after I reset my widget template the reactions showed up.

Huy Lương said...

I tickes it. But it doesn't appear. However, I have a modified template.

Well, I think it's cool, but I can't figure out how to change the icons for each option... The screenshots show different icons, so it must be possible, but how is it done?

Also, it would be nice to get new features like this without resetting widget templates, since I have a lot of customizations that are difficult to find and restore.

Not appearing on my site. :(

Wonderful but I found a bug
I voted in this blog for all options and it adds to all.
I appreciate all you have done and waiting for more interesting features

Melk said...

It seems to have some problems in Opera 9.51. The number of votes do not appear [I have something like "+ useful ( )"] and pressing a button doesn't do anything. Works fast and OK in Firefox.

Anyway, it would be nicer to be able to add this type of voting to selected individual posts, not to all of them in the footer. The vote options should not be the same for all posts, but you should be able to choose different options for each post. If I could add this inside one or two of my posts I would be happier.

Not working actually :-(

I can vote many times, not useful although I thought different first

This must be customizable in each post, but this is the start

It does not show in my blog at all.
Then again, earlier feture of the comment box on the same page didin't show up until today.

Maybe it is not implemented accross the board or perhaps someone like "The Captain" could explain this "widget template reseting" to see if it'll work

Aryan said...

I can enter reactions multiple times within the same seesion. Not a good idea. It should atleast lock my reaction to the post after i have entered my rating(via cookies maybe?) So basically i will need to reload the page before i can enter my vote again

the checkbox should change colors or something. it doesn't really pop right now.

Hey thanks for this feature!

Just a quick note, it's not “reactions-buttons” that you have to search, but “reaction-buttons”. :)

Cheers,

Really nice. However I would like to have the ability to disable this function for particular posts...

Daniel said...

I've got it working now although I've noticed a major problem. The numbers are not going up at all. ie: even if I use different browsers and different ip's through proxies.

Anyone noticed the same or is it just me, or you may suggest something to fix the problem

cheers

Rohit Malik said...

It's ok & might seem to be a cool feature but there are many useful features which must be implemented first like :

Make blogger part of Google Apps.

Offer complete web hosting services so that we can add images & other files in our own domain name.

make it possible to create pages

show summary of posts instead of complete posts in homepage & label pages.

let us add audio / music.

etc. etc.

So, my opinion is that all the features mentioned above will make blogger a serious tool for blogging and not just a 'cool' thing to make the kids happy. :-)

I have the same problem. The numbers are not going up at all.

I have a customised template and get an error measage when I try to modify the html to add it to my blog. I have had this problem with star ratings to. It would be nice if you would add these features to the main dashboard so that those of us with customised or third party templates can add these features a lot more easy. I am great with css but I have a hard time with html.

I got it working after "Revert widget templates to default." But how do you fix the big space between Reactions and your first one?
Mine looks like this:
Reactions: BIG-----EMPTY------SPACE Funny, educational, etc.

Mike~ said...

I have some suggestions and comments to make:

Please put a "read more" button for the post editor (just like the one in wordpress)

A Most Viewed Post Gadget

A Code BOX where in the post editor

Thank you so much for blogger!

Voyagerfan5761 said...

My slight confusion about the new feature aside, I would really like to see the ability to create pages, and to upload arbitrary files (like XML, JavaScript, CSS, small images, etc.) into a small (say 100 MB or so) storage space that comes with the blog. Those are the two features I could use the most right now. (Well, them and auto-save in the new editor... ;-)

Utils said...

I was able to vote once for each button.

So yeah, buggy. If you want people to be able to change their react, I suggest that you subtract that point from the last one clicked.

Also, it would be nice if we ha categories along with the labels/tags you provide.

For example, a Category could be 'Pets' and the tags you use could be 'cats' and 'dogs'.

dumper said...

This is a very cool feature, but why not handling it like labels? If it was possible to quickly enter new (or the saved old, just like labels) reactions while writing the post, that would be much more flexible.
Also, I think if it's a rating system then 1 IP=1 point, and if the person changes their mind, the point is substracted and added elsewhere. But it's a great idea, excellent interaction tool WordPress can only dream of ;)

jadz said...

It also doesn't appear on my page...

Sebastian Hickey said...

I can't get it to store any results. It is as though the votes cast are not stored globally. As soon as I move to another PC the votes have dissappeared. Please advise how I can get the reation gadget to store the votes.

I am having the same issue as Mr. Hickey above and would also appreciate a solution. Thanks

This is the feature I was desiring.
Thank you a lot!

Kellyn said...

But I guess this can't work for classic templates, doesn't it? And, is there anyway we can give suggestions on what kind of features we'd like to see in blogger?

chanteuse sanders said...

This is confusing me so much. Because the STAR ratings doesn't even work for my blog. Why is that? I'm using a template I made. Do you think this is the reason why the stars and the ratings won't appear?

Dinorider d'Andoandor said...

the stars rating works perfectly for my blog but this thing does not!
:(

Dinorider d'Andoandor said...

forget my complains, I made that "revert widgets" thing on the "edit code" stuff and now I can see it in my blog, I even edited the text and so on.

Open door to everyone... said...

If we don't want to Revert widget templates to default, what code to enter after searching for the reactions-buttons?

I have removed this feature from my blogs simply because it does not store results and I can't get any support for it. After mor than a week of posting a question here you would think by now Google could find one person out of the thousands they employ to at least monitor this blog a few minutes a day to point people in the right direction for answers to their questions if this is not the appropriate place ask for support. In any case, I checked the other forums on this problem and they too are crapshoots. It makes no sense IMHO to use this blog just for making announcemnts if people are going to be left out in the lurch. Sorry to be so negative but that's how this frustrated blogger truly feels about being ignored.

Ray of Mars said...

I tried this feature on my log also. It didn't work, so I guessed that it may possibly be that some sort of template customization I had done had interfered with it, so I made a test blog and left everything at default, and it still won't record the results on that one either.

Maybe it'll get straightened out soon.

Nice feature, I'd like to have it, but not ready for primetime!

Bombchell said...

this is pretty cool.

especially for readers that don't like leaving comments. it's an easy click. and i guess we get to give them the options.

I wonder if there is a way to add to each post option the option of leaving reactions or not, like we can with comments.

Hontap said...

I think it's better if you make a "minus" symbol (-) near the "plus" for each reaction. If not, we often use a pair of reactions like "useful" and "not useful", it takes place on our blog and may destroy theme.

A new great feature:

Cool feature but a nuisance that it requires cutting and pasting code to make it work in the Minima Lefty Stretch template. Would also like to see it available for single posts rather than all posts.

I would agree with the others I would like to see this for single post.

I can't get it to show up... I think it's really an awesome thing if it was working for me. :)

I've checked in a few browsers thinking that was the problem. A few people asked about being able to post to their blogs more easily.. I just discovered FLOCK browser that lets you do it from there... cook tool for google blogs and WP. :)

Shoe said...

How do I "upgrade to layouts"? I've no idea what that means.

Hans said...

This feature is like ClickComments.com Instead of text, ClickComments has icons. Furthermore, it recommends other content from the same blog.

Ancelyna said...

Hi! I did the "Revert widget templates to default" and it appeared on my blog and made me happy and all that.. but whenever I refresh the page (I don't even have to use a different browser or computer) the numbers (1) are just reset back to (0). And also, if anyone accidentally clicks a wrong button, there is no way to fix it. Other than that, this draft thing is AWESOME!

Claudinha said...

Oh,great! But...
I try, but it doesn't appear. However, I have a modified template. May you help me?

Stefaan Boel said...

you can click on all of them, so it gives you a fake overview!

Parantar said...

is it working to you? it doesn't work to me.

Botogol said...

Nice idea - but it will only be useful when you can configure separately for each post (on/off and what the different options are).

Alessandro Machi said...

I still would love a three column blog, I tried an hacker version on a test blog, it works, but I lost some stuff.

Why won't google do it?
