Features and Bug Fixes for August 14th

Today’s release to Blogger in draft brings one new feature: Reactions, which are customizable one-click buttons below your posts. Read more on our announcement post, and try them out on this blog.

We’ve added better show/hide controls and brought back the post count and Blogs of Note to the new dashboard, and published it to the main Blogger site.

In case you missed it, we moved Google Gadgets and the gadget directory to the main Blogger site as well.

This release also has some fixes to other Blogger in draft features:

New Post Editor
  • Edit HTML mode now has a toolbar.
  • The Compose toolbar gets a fifth font size, and “Normal” should now more correctly match the font size on your blog.
  • Newly added images will correctly pick up the border styles from your blog’s template.
Import / Export
  • Basic settings are now saved and restored.
  • Templates (both Classic and Layouts) are saved and restored.
  • Exporting a blog will now cause the XML file to download in Safari.
  • Import blog messaging now distinguishes between published and draft posts.

So can we import and export larger than 1 meg now?

I have a huge blog, which is about 20 or so megs, and it only imports about 1 meg of data, or did.

Is this fixed yet?

Also, does the export and import save and restore comments as well?

What happened to the Analytics? It was always a link on the dashboard. now I can't find it.

Still can't import my Wordpress blog export. You're making it hard for me to switch to your service.

With regard to the new subscription gadget, you only get the options for the default rss and atom feed. It would be nice to incorporate Feedburner, seeing as though you own it. I have my feed through that and have added the subscribe link through the HTML/javascript gadget, but I like the way the new gadget works.

Cheers, webgurl

Where you guys are going to make page for comments? I mean, I want to see comments made in my blog in chronological order at the control panel. Also, ability to delete them from there etc would be awesome too. I suggest to join this thing with current comment moderation page asdasd.

Please, guys, it's more important than that reactions feature.

Have you fixed the problem with embed comment field? When it's active I couldn't comment

I don't like that the Blogger in Draft be my default dashboard. How can I have the older dashbord?
Thank you.

love that you brought back the post count!!!

something is a bit wonky with comments (on one's own blog), they're posting twice!!! what's up with that? it doesn't appear that others' comments on my blog post twice, but now it's happened to me twice!! please look at that!

otherwise, love the new features and changes, was thinking a bit about wordpress, but now i'm not. :-)

I am pretty happy with the current BiD-editor. Two things I would like in the editor:

- A check box on links "open in a new window"
- control over graphics after they have been imported (wrapping, size)

I would also like it to be easier to integrate headers and footers into each message (e.g. social networking links, calls to subscribe, etc).

Thanks!

Peter said...

Correction: I see manipulating graphics now has more options. Very happy. So I take back that point.

When I write my blog, I link to link to other articles in my blog. It would be nice if that were easy to do, e.g. directly from the link pop up, kind like how it works in thunderbird and internal links.

Hello. Congratulations on this effort to make blogger better.
The export/import feature does not support accentuated characters in other languages other than English. I got a lot of squares in Portuguese for the é, ã, etc..
The reason I’m not yet convinced about using this new comment form is that if one chooses the goggle account, a dialog box does not appear prompting for user and pass, like in other options. It forces the user to insert two different control codes and then takes him/her to the blogger page. Something the old comment layout does not do: doesn’t present such hassle. Is seems it’s easier in this new form for someone without a google account to comment...
Cheers

Seems like there is no picture upload button anymore at the HTML-editor section (in draft). Well let's say, not while running OS X 10.4 and Safari 3.1.2 or Firefox 3.0.1. There is one in the normal editor section but this one will not be able to upload more than one pix.

Hello!

When you changed the new Post Editor, something has changed and big part of my blog is foul of strange signs.

You can see the signs here: http://www.bfax.gr/2008/07/hol-you-are.html

I didn't change something because i was in vacation so something is done. My blog is in Greek and a lot of past texts are effected and not readable anymore.

The new one (published today) is ok.

Is this a bug? hacker's actions? a fault? What's going on?

Thanks in advance,

Sincerely,

SS

Simos Segiopoulos said...

I think i have a clue here, in some texts i used br-bR for a space between lines and not blocquote. Is this the problem? But why did it put squares in the text? Thanks again!

Ghosty said...

Can we have a differentiation between pictures uploaded to Blogger, and those hosted elsewhere, as far as what is applied to them from the template?

Check this URL:
http://ghostykips.blogspot.com/2008/08/my-social-second-life.html

I have the SL logo next to some links, in line with the text. I do not want Blogger messing with that code. Uploaded pics, fine, match the borders. But I want the power to be able to do this and not have Blogger muck with it. :)

Simos Segiopoulos said...

I left for 15 days, i came back and 80% of my blog is full of instead of text.

The language on the blog is greek but the other 20% of the blog is in greek too but i can read it. The greek language is not supported in the Blogger? There have been no announcement, just some changes by you. What is going on?

Thank you,
Simos

Hi there, this is off topic in your post. I have some questions regarding author highlights. Is this possible in the new blogger?

And what about the widget installation forms? After this upgrade all widget installation forms not working, including FeedBurner feed count and Amazon Widgets. Do you know about that?

I'd like to make a feature request.

Can you add an option under "Post date and time" for "current time"?

The idea being that sometimes it takes you a day to finish your post and instead of having to go into the date and time and setting it to the current time, you could just check a box or select a radio button so that it would determine the current time for you and set it before publishing.

I would like this setting to be remembered between publishes, so it is set as default for all my posts.

I am thinking that in the Post Date and Time section you have a radio button with 3 options:
1) current time: automatically set time on publish (possibly set as default for everyone, except when editing a previously published post)
2) future publish (and boxes to set the date/time): specify time in future when post should become live on blog
3) custom time (boxes to set date/time): publish is done instantly at the time specified (whether in the future or the past)

I have created a Greasemonkey script that adds a "Publish Now" button that accomplishes the same thing that I have outlined here, but I think that others would like this functionality built into to Blogger itself.

Thanks for considering this.

I found a bug: The new Import/Export feature does not support Chinese words.

Jordi Soler said...

Bugs import/export:

1. locale characters are not exported well (for instance, accents in Spanish)

2. comments are not imported with the posts (sometimes they do, sometimes only half of them, most of the times none).

One wish:

Please please allow importing Wordpress blogs: I've been waiting for more than two years for this feature!

Hi, I'd also like to point out that 3rd party widget installations are no longer working and produce the error code: bX-s1feoa ("sectionId: Required field must not be blank").

Please get a fix out for this ASAP.

Thanks!

Some suggestions?

a) Site meter to track usage and IP addresses, and allow to block them if needed.

b) In the dashboard editor, the ability to select multiple labels to zero in on items, same on the blog itself. Instead of being able to select 1 label only, multiple labels would be good, like LABELA+LABELB+LABELC to help drill down.

c) In the editor, the ability to delete multiple items at once.

d) Ability to hide some items, viewable by only users you chose to allow to view an item.

e) An enhancement to allow you to show items without a label, if any.

f) More 3 column templates and styles.

g) Option to invite other editors, but for only certain labels.

h) Fix the export/import for huge files, and also to export/import comments, templates and blog items.

This is just a few suggestions.

in my opinion the old dashboard was better than new one, but the new feature of adding gadget is very use full

Bug report: In IE7, if you attempt to paste something from the clipboard, you will get a dialog box the first time saying "Do you want this page to access the clipboard?" If you paste the beginning of a WordPad file into the body of the post in Compose mode, and you get this dialog box first, IE7 crashes.

The post editor is much better now you have changed it

i had an idea that i thought all blogs could do with - a page that shows links to all the posts you've ever done - A link on the main page saying "Post selector" and it goes to this page or even better - a little popup with all posts - please let me know what you think about this

Blogger in Draft has been great so far. I would like to request a "Top Commentators" and "Recent Commentators" feature, like the one you have here implemented on the Blogger in Draft blog.

Thanks.

How can I ask for a new feature?

I'd like the label XML structure to develop adding levels...
Adding this in the post editor:
languages/italian, food, drinks/wine
... you should be able to have your post filed in languages, food and drinks folders, and italian and wine subfolders...

Isn't it so simple and useful?

I know PLENTY of people that make cathegorized labels menus with the links list widget!

Please, ask for this to the right people!!!

I think that Blogger should also make it so you can move the pictures around within your post once they are uploaded

Blogger would be perfect if your commenting system improved. There are just three fields we want for comments: Name, EMAIL, url. The rest can be thrown right out the window.

I would like to suggest an option to hide a post from the post archive. I wanted to hide some post from the archive since their interconnected with other posts.....

I really enjoyed Blogger-In-Draft's Export and Import function. Really handy to be able to have a backup copy of the blog.

However, on the normal Blogger, the template stuff required to get a copy of the backup file is way technical and very hard to understand. It talk about removing the indentations from the following lines. This is quite unfortunate for those who aren't comfortable with dealing with code. Wordpress has a way better system.

And I agree with one of the above comments that Blogger should try and have a categories section. Its very handy and easy to browse as well. Blogger has the upper hand as there is an edit template option but there are too many errors that pop up and to set up your own categories list requires knowledge of .php. Now that is intimidating for just casual blog users

It would be nice to have a "comments inbox" on the dashboard, though.
