New toolbar, AJAX saving, and other fixes for the post editor

Today we’ve released a few enhancements to the new post editor, fixed some bugs, created a new one or two, and left a handful of things to fix later.

New Stuff

  • AJAX save. We’re still not saving posts automatically, but now the “Save Now” button will keep the post editor open, and Ctrl-S works as a shortcut for saving. (Internet Explorer users: use Ctrl-Shift-S to save.)

  • New toolbar. This toolbar looks better, loads more quickly, and has undo and redo buttons. By popular demand, the full justification button has returned. We’ve also added a strike through button and improved the color palettes.

  • Vertical resizing. You can now change the height of the post editor by dragging the resize handle in the lower right (near the labels field). The size is saved in a per-user, per-blog preference.

Fixed Bugs

  • <div>s in Edit HTML are now better-preserved in Compose mode. This should fix most post summary hacks. If your hack uses <span> tags, please switch to using <div>s.

  • Lists created in Compose mode can now have new items added to them after switching to Edit HTML and back.

  • Line breaking is no longer lost when editing a post in the old editor that was first written in the new editor.

  • Nested block-level elements no longer create odd blank lines.

  • Non-breaking spaces now consistently appear as &nbsp; in Edit HTML mode.

New Bugs (that we know about)

  • The publish and save buttons wrap oddly on Mac browsers.

Major Remaining Bugs (that we know about)

  • The Font Size menu has 4 sizes instead of 5, and “normal” looks small.

  • Paragraph tags are lost when switching from Edit HTML to Compose.

  • The Blockquote button still behaves oddly, especially in Internet Explorer.

  • The URL an image links to cannot be changed without using Edit HTML mode.

  • Images inserted with this editor do not pick up border styles from the blog template.

  • Inserting a new link with the link dialog loses your place in the post.

Find anything else? See: How to report HTML bugs with the new post editor

Things Left To Add

  • Toolbar in Edit HTML mode

  • Autosave

  • Spellcheck

  • Video upload

  • FTP image upload

  • Bi-directional text input and Indic transliteration

  • and a handful of smaller things too numerous to include here

Is it possible to use HTML p tag instead of br tag?

Hey Pete!

It's good to see you guys finally include the strike through button (as it is much easier than typing in the html code for it).

However, I do have a list of suggestions to add to the toolbar (so I hope you don't hate me for potentially delaying publishing this toolbar to the masses in order to incorporate these random ideas).

1) Sub/super script button: This would be helpful, especially if one writes science content on their blog (I do on one of my space blogs).

2) Graphs/Charts: A way to easily insert graphs/charts into blogger. My suggestion is to hook up with the Google Docs team, and have one of their members help implement this within Blogger.

3) Underline button: This would be very cool as well. Yeah, it may not be used frequently, but you never know when you may want to add extra emphasis.

4) More Video Buttons!: First off, could you bring back the video button? I miss it sooo much.

Anyways, insert other uploading options for Video, such as YouTube, Google Video, etc. You could have a simple video button, which after they click upon it it will have other features/video hosts they can choose to upload it too.

These are just a few that I could think of, although I'll let everyone else suggest the rest. ;-)

Anyways, thanks again for developing this Pete! (plus the Blogger team!)

~Darnell

PS

LONG LIVE BLOGGER!!!

Thanks Pete, and when will you add a ReadMore feature for us? :)

Thank you for keep improving your service.

No need for Spellcheck : Firefox has that already !
Don't waste time.

Great new stuff and fixes...still a few bugs to work out, so thanks for all your hard work! I can't wait until the new editor is ready for regular use!!

I also like the idea mentioned above for an underline function. I have often wished that was available.

I DO NOT like the idea to scrap spellcheck...not all of us use Firefox.

sound cool to me... when r u guys going to release cool blogspot themes like wordpress has...??

elPadawan said...

Great, and thanks for the improvements! I see there is now a "strike-through" alongside Bold and Italic. Is there any plans to have "underline" as well?

Hi Pete,

I hope you and other guys fix the span tag about hacks. Because it's hard to change all previous post from span to div.

Thanks for your efforts...

it seems I can't set the alignment of image in the new editor unless I do it with html - that's not very convenient.

Thanks for all your work updating and improving Blogger. I have noticed some odd behavior with the blockquote function in Firefox 3. My problem is that it sets the paragraphs below the blockquote into the same format as the quote itself, except outdented left of the normal margin.

Thanks for your work so far on improving blogger.

I don't know if this is the correct location for posting enhancement requests but I have a small one that I was wonder if it will be included in this release.

After publishing a post will there be a 'view post' link in addition to the 'view blog', 'edit post', and 'create a post' links?

DarkUFO said...

I agree, that would be a great addition to add a View Post link as currently you then have to go back to your list of posts and get the url. This little change would save me so much time.

Apologies for duplication, should have probably commented here not against the older post:
My tuppence worth on the new post editor in Firefox 3.0.1. Summary:
1. Greasemonkey broken (incl. large post editor, Technorati tagger, keep current time to ensure draft posts bear the date of publication not first creation)
2. Ctrl shift a and ctrl shift p don't work (ctrl shift p publishes not previews).
3. Images - various points please see my post.
4. Saving confirmation/failure - at top too?
5. Ensure keyboard shortcuts generally work; toggle between Edit & Compose view? Bulleted lists in Fox?
6. Show Post Options all the time.
Cheers!

For sometimes now, when writing posts, the 'spell' checking button doesn't work. Is there any reson for this?

Melissa DiStefano said...

I am so looking forward to spell check! Please don't nix that!

Thanks for Blogger in Draft, I couldn't imagine my life without it!

seriously WHEN will we be able to email comments back to commenter's! this is the most annoying thing with blogger.. and why is there NO place to email you suggestions!

Where the heck is spell check and the justified paragraph button? Come on people!

And could you make a strike-thru button too? That would be fun and popular and make my life easier....which what I am all about!

You could have a simple video button, which after they click upon it it will have other features video hosts they can choose to upload it too. It is amazing discovery of human mind.

Falta um método mais fácil de implementar o widget nuvem de tags. Isso é muito usado hoje em dia. E o blogger não possui este widget.

HI! I noticed today that I'm unabele to comment my Posts. That only happend when embed Comments under the Post was active, and only with posts that haven't a comment yet. With an extra comment site it works. It seems as if there is a bug. Would be nice if you can fix it.

My wysiwyg editor on the comments is missing, my commenters are getting a "blank" box.

Dano and Reed said...

Despite several attempts to locate a useful answer to this question, I have yet to find one with solutions that work: I cannot get comments to automatically show beneath posts. Since there is no "comment button," visitors to the blog sometimes don't know how to comment (which requires that they click on the little "# of comments" link in order to read comments or to post them. Oddly, after posting a comment, they can hit the "view comment" button to see it on the post page, but that's only after the fact, and there is no default setting to allow them to show all the time...what gives?

I am loving blogger in draft.

I was really pleased when you introduced the 'scheduled posts' I had wanted this feature for a very long time. Well done.

One other small thing that I would love to see, is a wider choice of fonts. I personally would love to be able to choose a 'handwriting' font.

I know you are very busy but please could you consider this reqest.

Thanks for all your hard work.

I'm gonna have to go ahead and request the underline button too. We have bold and italics, so underline seems quite a sensible option.

this is off the topic, but regarding mail to blogger, is it possible to remove the annoying
that appears in my post when i use mail to blogger?

PopcornBytes said...

I tried the new post editor and I liked it a lot.

Oh, and please please PLEASE don't scrap the spellchecker!!!! I use it all the time!!

When I choose Embedded below post then people cannot leave a comment on my blog. When comment link is clicked it takes you to page for that individual post ex: http://sereneskunk.blogspot.com/2008/08/sleep.html#comment-form
there is a Post A Comment Link there but nothing happens when clicked. All comments left previously using Full page comment placement can be read below the post.

Anyone else experiencing this??

I'm at http://sereneskunk.blogspot.com/

keep up the great work!

I don't have any issues with blogspot.com except I find the upload pictures process a pain. I would love to have multiple pictures upload where you click on a bunch and upload at the same time, instead of doing each picture individually.

Please implement spellcheck soon. I need it. I don't use firefox and while I used to be a stellar speller, having two babies sucked out all my brain cells, and now I question my spelling all the time.

Also, in the post editor, every time I get to the end of a line, the last two letters on that line add a horizontal scrollbar at the bottom of the box and push the first letter of each line to the left, out of view. And I can't view the first letter of each line by arrowing to it. I have to start a new paragraph in order to get the first letter of each line to jump back into view. This is highly annoying. Is it fixable, or do I just have to grin and bear it until I get a newer computer with a wider screen?

What happened to the add video button? I used to use it a lot.

An upload video directly from computer button would be nice. I use google sites too, and it is very time consuming to have to upload it to google video first. I don't want to have to do that on blogger too.

You should render the HTML with basic tags as much as possible instead of using span classes. It seems a bit inconsistent, since bold and italicited use 'b' and 'i'.

Not all feeds are smart enough to interpret strikethrough (e.g. 's') as a text decoration. And having text that wasn't crossed out can be especially confusing.
