New Feature: Embedded Comment Form

One of the most common complaints about Blogger’s comment form is that it’s on a separate page from the post, styled in a way that doesn’t match the blog. Our new embedded comment form addresses that by putting the comment form where your readers expect it: at the bottom of the post.

To turn on the embedded comment form, log in to http://draft.blogger.com/ and go to Settings > Comments for your blog. You’ll see that the “Show comments in a popup window?” setting has been replaced with the new “Comment Form Placement” setting. Just click “Embedded below post,” save your settings, and go check out a post to see your new comment form.

Additional Features

  • The comment form works with Google Accounts, OpenID authentication, name / URL, and anonymous identities. As with the current comment form, we’ve set up shortcuts for a handful of common OpenID providers.

  • Once you log in with a Google Account for one blog, you won’t have to log in to comment on other blogs during your browser session. Nevertheless, to protect your privacy, we use an <iframe> to keep your logged-in identity inaccessible to the blog itself.

  • If you have a “Comment Form Message” set up, we put it on the post page above the comment form.

  • If you require word verification for commenting on your blog, we’ll show the word verification form in a small dialog after you click “Post Comment.”

  • Update, 6/27: The embedded comment form works with Classic templates. The <$BlogItemCreate$> tag will add the right HTML to your page.

Caveats

  • If you’ve edited your template for the blog widget, you won’t automatically pick up the new code for the comment form. You’ll need to either reset the template by deleting the contents of the <b:widget id='Blog1' locked='true' title='Blog Posts' type='Blog'> element (backup your template first!) or copy the code from an unmodified blog. Update, 6/27: Amanda from Blogger Buster has written a howto post for updating a modified blog widget template

  • The font color of the comment form is currently hard-coded to black. If your template has a dark background, this may make the “Comment As:” label hard to read.

  • The embedded comment form currently does not support subscribing to follow-up comments via email, nor does it have a preview button.

How’s it working for you? Anything else you’d like to see? Does the comment form look particularly good or bad in your template?

Let us know in the comments, now with convenient embedded comment form technology.

I've added the embedded comment form to my blog, and it works great, but it would be better to have preview and editing available.

Also it would be wonderful to be able to reply to individual posts as you can at you tube. (or to have a quote option availabe, as on message boards)

Not having to click on comments to read them would be great also.
I'd like for them to appear below each blog post, that way they can be picked up for alerts by Google.

Keep up the good work ... love trying out new things!

Amanda said...

I'm thrilled to see this has been added to the Blogger service :D

Pete, I'm not sure if you've read about the competition I'm running on my blog, but this is the most requested feature from my readers! I will post about this ASAP to let readers know how to add this functionality to their templates.

Thank you!!!!

DarkUFO said...

Couple of questions

1) Can you provide instructions for those of us with modified templates to add these to our site.

2) The Captcha form does not always work when displayed

3) If you have a post with more than 200 comments there is no way to see comments 201 and beyond.

4) There is no "Jump to comment form"

5) Would like the option to have the comment form appear above the first comment to make point 4 not necessary

6) For the future would you be able to provide simple html buttons so that users can easily link, bold, italic etc without having to put in hard coded < b > controls etc.

7) Be able to set the height and width of the input box.

Recep Hilmi Tufan said...

I can't do that. Must I delete that codes?

Robert Seddon said...

I tried copying some code over, but got an empty space where the form should be; I too think it would help to be told exactly what the code is we're to copy.

DeTToX said...

Thanks to your work.

Amanda said...

@Dark UFO: I just posted details for installing the comment form on customized templates. For your 200+ comments, do you have comment pagination enabled in your template? If not, you may want to create a new blog with a default template as these have the appropriate code embedded in the mark-up.

You can also modify your template with a link to "#comment-form" rather than "#comments" (again, because you have modified your template, this code will not already be in place). I think you could also cut and paste the comment form code above the comments block, so the form would display above comments, rather than below them (but I haven't tried this yet).

Hope this is useful so far! Sorry I can't help with the other questions though, maybe this super helpful Blogger team can lend a hand :)

Nice feature but with a strange behaviour in Opera 9.5 when choosing "Google Account": There is no pop-up to log in, but the page loads and loads again 0 byte.

JohnF said...

This is great. Some additional enhancements that would be great would include:

- Allow customization of hard-coded colors and fonts in the CSS section so it can be styled to match the blog style

- Allow width of comments form to auto expand to fill available space. For example, if we have widened the main column, the form window for writing comments seems a bit narrow.

Farah said...

This is really great! I am a bit curious..how can I get follow-up comment to my mail in this system? There is no option to choose.

Markos said...

Wow!Now I (L) Blogger lol

JohnF said...

After adding this, If I click on a "5 comments" type link from the end of the post on the main blog page, the target jumps to the top of the comments form in the item page (url ending in #comment_form) . Is there a way to have it jump to the top of previously submitted comments instead? That would be good for people who just want to view the comments.

Matt said...

I'm totally loving the new way to post comments. Great job you guys on all the new features you've been working on.

Finally!!!!!

Thank you fellows. One of the most requested feature see's daylight :D

Now some probs and suggestions
1) On opera (9.5) the profile field takes its time being set. You just can't select the dropdown for quite a long period of time. Its instant in firefox
2) Shouldn't the submit button be center aligned? it comes left aligned for me. Since we are using 100% width, imo center is better.
3) Add basic bold, italic buttons
4) For people who are using comment moderation, a bigger notification to the end user that his comment is in moderation queue.

Amit said...

Finally!
thanks.

Amanda: Thanks for the clear post about adding the new code to a modified blog widget template.

JohnF: Thanks for the reports and suggestions. The #comment-form link from the "n comments" link on the index page is a bug that we've filed internally.

To everyone who has a Layouts blog and isn't seeing the new form when you select the "Embedded below post" setting, follow Amanda's instructions for updating your template.

Amanda said...

Hello Pete,

Thanks for the link to my tutorial :)

I just have two questions about the new form:

Firstly, the "Comment as" link is dark and cannot be seen against a dark background. I know it would be possible to add some CSS to our templates to change the color, but is there any way this could be altered automatically to suit the color of default text? This way others using this new feature wouldn't need to edit their templates further.

Secondly, the form doesn't let us to subscribe to comments by email while logged in with our Google accounts. Would this feature be added in the future? (It would be really useful if it's possible!).

Thanks for these great new features! We really do appreciate the hard work that's gone into this :D

Agree that when clicking "XX comments" some people want to see the existing comments rather than the comment form.

Perhaps you will consider to change the text. For example, if not any comment yet then the text shows "leave a comment," and clicking it will go to the form. On the other hand, the text shows "XX comments" when there're already some comments and clicking it will to the existing comments.

i like having the embedded comment form. i realize the font color of the text is hard-coded, this is a real drawback on dark colored sites. hopefully being able to select the font color will be an option soon. i'm considering change back the the old commenting functionality until we can customize the colors...

I'd prefer a hovering form on right that can be collapsed and expanded. This way people can type in their comments while scrolling up and down if they want to refer to a specific comment or original post.

I'm not too familiar with html and stuff but I think this feature is amazing. Nevertheless I use a downloaded template from arcsin, and I think turning on the new option doesn't work with this template. I don't wanna alter the html template since once I do something I may not be able to undo it.

shannondees said...

Linden said...

"The embedded comment form currently does not support subscribing to follow-up comments via email, nor does it have a preview button."

Yikes! These two things will keep me from adding this feature. For me, being able to preview posts before adding them and being able to subscribe so my readers can participate in the conversation are more important than a comment form after the blog post. Are you trying to implement them?

rohman said...

Great features. Thanks to blogger team :D

magznetwork said...

i love it!!!!

Pete said...

Addressing two of the issues that seem to have come up a bit:

JavaScript: Obviously a lot of what we're trying to do with this requires JavaScript. But falling back to the old post editor in some way is a good suggestion, ooscarr.

Follow-up Comments Emails: Before this feature leaves Draft we're going to try to implement everything that's in the current comment editor, so you don't lose features when switching to the embedded form. Preview might be tricky, so we'll see about that one, but follow-up comments via email is certainly near the top of our list to implement.

Yeah, it would be great if we could style the comment form ouselves. Right now looks ugly in the context of my blog; but hey, it's always better than the prevoous form.

JRB said...

This is great, I just the comments working on my own yesterday, but am glad to use this new feature.

Question: How can I get the comments and comment form to show up on my blog instead of individual posts?

JRB said...

Using Mozilla, there was no "comment as" profiles to select and hitting the "Post Comment" button refreshed the page, but did not post the comment. The comment text was still in the comment box. Using IE, it worked fine using the anonymous profile.

One note: The word verification that comes up for embedded comment forms is that version that is impossible to decipher. Swirly. Slanty. Mushed together. I just tried to comment on a blog with the embedded comment form that has enabled word verification and it took me SIX TRIES to get one I could actually get correct. I know you used this impossible version of word verification on regular Blogger for a bit but then you changed it back to the easier-to-read version. I hope you do that here as well. It's difficult enough to get people to comment when you enable word verification but the second you turn it off, you get a flood of spam comments. I really wish we could switch to a better format all together for verification. One site that hosts a blog I visit uses a simple math equation as verification. So much easier to read!!

Silvi said...

I created a draft blog in order to try the new features. I started with one of the blogger templates and the embedded comments worked fine. I uploaded a xml template from my computer afterwards and it stopped working. I tried to use a blogger template again but the embedded comments just won't work anymore.

JohnF said...

I tried to post this a few days ago, but I couldn't get past the word verification (possibly an IE6 specific problem since I have less problems in Firefox)

In IE6, clicking on the "5 coments" type link on a main page triggers the standard pop-up comment window instead of going to the comment form on the item page.

A workaround for the blogs with dark background problem is to lighten just the comment form background with lines like this example in the CSS portion of the template.

.comment-form {
background:#444444;
border:1px solid #666666;
padding-left:5px;
padding-right:5px;
}

I had a problem with the embedded comment form when someone tried to leave a comment, but made a mistake with their html tags.

The commenter let me know that they could not post their comment, so I switched back to the old form and they managed to find out what the problem was using the Preview button.

The new form has no preview or checking, and provided no feedback to the commenter that there was an error with their comment, just threw it away.

I have a dark background.
When I see my blog with Firefox, everything is fine, i.e. the iframe background for the embedded comment is dark (I'm not talking about the textarea, I mean the iframe background).
But when I see my blog with Firefox, the iframe background is white.
Anyone with the same problem? Any solution or workaround?
Thanks!

Customized Templates: Sorry folks, you're on your own. We recommend not customizing widget templates, especially the blog widget template, unless you're really willing to work to get the new features that uncustomized widget templates get for free.

Dawn: Yes, we'll be switching to the easier word verification images in the embedded editor.

JohnF: What blog? Has the template been customized? Is it Classic or Layouts? Also, good tip about lightening the background!

Pete: Thanks for taking the time to go through and answer our questions.

I notice that the iframe used for the Embedded comments forum has a fixed width setting. Can this be removed so that we can control the width via editing the Width statement on the iframe line in the Template? This would allow us to control how wide it appears.

Also I think some work is need on the form so that it can mimic our existing comments form ie.

1) Have person icon etc showing on the comments listing.
2) Have an "Intro" text that appears above the form ie "No Spamming message etc"

No offense, but this is an eyesoar! I prefer the pop-up with the 'follow up' and 'word verification' over this. Sorry it's just unattractive. Look at this and tell me you think this looks good: http://www.partyfavorz.net/2008/05/donna-summer-crayons-review.html That being said, the best thing you could do for the comment section is to finally display ALL comments on a transparent background. I had a temporary hack that got wiped out when you guys implemented this. What I've found is that displaying everyone's else's comments engages people more than when their hidden. Now, if you can deliver that I will bow down to the altar of the Blogger development team and even buy you a beer. Cheerz.

This is a great feature! Thanks.

The following additions would make it even better, though:

1) A *preview* button. This is almost *essential*, even if it requires a pop-up window.

2) The e-mail subscription option (which I see is on the to-do list).

3) HTML formatting buttons (for the original comment form too) so that commentors can avoid mistakes with HTML tags (which is also awkward to use, especially for non-technical people).

4) Avatars / Profile pictures next to comments. If Blogger can even somehow collaborate with other blog providers (WordPress, TypePad, etc..) to show avatars of their users too, it would be excellent.

I wouldn't use this embedded comment form if at least the *preview* button is not available.

The "Google Account" option for "Comment as:" does not seem to work as well for the embedded comment form as it did for the original form. I tried to submit this comment twice yesterday using the "Google Account" option, but neither of the comments showed up, even though I was logged into Gmail AND Blogger. A little feedback to see that my account was detected would be nice.

Anonymous said...

Finally I got my comment through (the one before this comment) using the Anonymous option.

Please fix the "Google Account" option. (Though it seems to work for other people.) Could you just make it detect my account like the original comment form does?

Francois

If you disable comments in a post, the "Post a comment" text still appears as well as the Comment Form Message. The comment box is missing though. For example, if you disable comments for this particular post, then all the text from "Post a comment" to "Off-topic posts will be deleted" will still appear underneath this post.

Hi. First of all,thanks for your work (and excuse me for my poor English language).

Like other people, I would like have in the «Post a comment» area some button to add in the textarea tags for bold, italic and link, but I would like use other buttons to add my emoticons, and other features (like avoid swearwords into comments, or avoid too long copy-paste).

Now, obviously, you can't satisfy the single demand of everyone, but with the iframe system, the single user can't control the textarea to his own necessity: to add my features, I must to be able to modify the HTML code of "textarea" tag, adding in this the instruction "onClick" and similar, to use the appropriate javascript function.

Conclusion: can you re-think the comment area whitout iframes, in order to enable to customize it for one's own desire?

Thanks for the attention.

WHy does it have to be at no-reply why can't it use the commenters email address, they can choose to allow email back or not.

"The embedded comment form currently does not support subscribing to follow-up comments via email, nor does it have a preview button."

When are you planning to add this feature???

I don't see this anywhere, hope I'm not overlooking it but the thing I'd love to see at Blogger most of all is a "READ MORE" option on your individual blog post. Does that make sense? So you can expand and collapse a long post. I've been with Blogger since 2002 and love the hard work you all do. Thanks!

You're doing a good thing, please keep at it. But not working for me. My blog: TalkToDonn.blogspot.com is something I'm trying to set up specifically to exchange comments with family members.

I followed instructions to activate through Blogger in Draft, but tests of entering the blog through the outside and trying to leave a comment to the first test Post does not manifest a Comment form anywhere.

Thanks, ContactDonn@gmail.com

Please add comment-iframe.g to blogger.com/robots.txt. Many search engines (including Google) already index iframes and it's important to prevent that. They're not useful for users, but spammers can post their wow gold/cheap rolex/v1agra ads.

I have this set up on my blogs but, every time I either comment on a blog, or respond to a comment on my blogs, I have to sign in. I am spending my day signing in. Any idea what can be wrong?

I love the new inline comment form, but one thing I would appreciate more than anything is a comment numbering system like on Wordpress (as in, "Comment #41 had a valid point") I know it's got to be a basic code, and I just can't wrap my brain about where to start with it. I have a giveaway blog where I get hundreds of comments that I have to manually number in a WordPad document and this is way too time consuming. I know it's got to be a simple solution, and even if tons of people aren't asking for it, I would be so thankful if you could do that.
Thank you for all the other cool features that you have done already :)

I like the new comment form, however, I really would like to be able to see the commentors pictures/avatars....I miss that a lot!

Also, a comment numbering function would be nice as well.

This was pretty much the only thing missing from my blogger experience. However, the IFRAME needs to inherit the styling of the main document. My blog does have a dark background, so I need to have the LABEL appear in the proper BODY font color, not black.

I use the blogger to change the embedded comment below which is not found on blogspot.com

Update, 6/27: The embedded comment form works with Classic templates. The <$BlogItemCreate$> tag will add the right HTML to your page.

it works perfectly. So Question , how do i customize text below [Post a comment] as seen above?

No one else seems to be having this issue, but when I implemented the new comment box, several of the comments on my site seem to have been deleted. I've restored the old comment form, but the comments are gone. I'm not sure where they've went or how to get them back.

5)comment numbering system.

You know what would even better
If you add one more option... to allow comments by everyone EXCEPT ANONYMOUS users.
To force them to at least type their name.
I would really like that! Btw, the inline comment form rocks!
Great job!

I have been considering changing my pop up window for comments to this setting, however, one thing I DON'T like, is that when you click on comments, your WHOLE blog reloads. If the comment box was embedded to be visible at all times, I think that would work more smoothly. Maybe with a link to view all comments if folks wanted to? That's one of the reasons I have my comments as pop up. I feel that my readers have an easier time returning to their spot on my blog.

Comment form that support subscribing to follow-up comments via email is NECESSARY!!!

Faisal Admar said...

I really need "edit comment" function so that I could reply people's comment on the same comment space. It won't abuse the number of comments which normally abused by people. Is that possible? Maybe you can make the original comment by people can't be edited but can be added for the owner? Hopefully...

Faisal Admar said...

I tried myself on the spot with the comment background color and it works. By the way, this is best result with black background color:

/* Comments
----------------------------------------------- */
#comments h4 {
margin:1em 0;
font-weight: bold;
line-height: 1.4em;
text-transform:uppercase;
letter-spacing:.2em;
color: white;

}

#comments-block {
margin:0em;
line-height:1.6em;
background: #999;
color: black;
padding:1em;
}
#comments-block .comment-author {
margin:.5em 0;
}
#comments-block .comment-body {
margin:.25em 0 0;
background: #999;

}
#comments-block .comment-footer {
margin:-.25em 0 2em;
line-height: 1.4em;
text-transform:uppercase;
letter-spacing:.1em;
}
#comments-block .comment-body p {
margin:0 0 .75em;
background: #999;
}
.deleted-comment {
font-style:italic;
color:gray;
}

You can simply refer to my blog to see the result :)

When I post using the Name/Url option it tags my URL with the name of this website (and does the same when someone posts on my blog). This messes up the referral link to the poster. Hover over my name here and see it?

The problem as noted on that link is that if the commentor uses the Name/URL option and doesn't include the "http://" in their web address, then the link will fail

Zac said...

by having the comment box underneath all the actual comments, it's tiresome for the user to scroll all the way down to find the box to enter their comments.

why not put the comment box above the comments themselves, and limit the number of comments shown to ~5? the rest of the comment could be display with next buttons using ajax to replace the information.

Zac said...

and also, there are a lot of RUBBISH comments in this post.

dcloud said...

Zac, it doesn't matter where it's located, because when you click on 'comments' it automatically takes you right to the comment box. So no one has to scroll anywhere.

Faisal, I used your comment block code for my own comments section and it works great. Thank you for posting the code.

I've been using the draft imbedded comment box for a while now on all three of my blogs. Thing is people are CONFUSED about which profile to choose now. The "old" style "Choose your profile" is MUCH MORE user friendly. The "new/draft" profile chooser is confusing. As I'm asking people about it, many of them don't even know that that "bloggers" can choose to comment as "google." In the older format it said "Google/Blogger" so people KNEW what to pick. When the new imbedded comment box stops being confusing to my readers, I'll start using it again. Until then, I'm going back to the old one.

Hi Pete,

I have a question about translation of "Post Comment" button. I know it's addressed to a variable value that's why it is translated to other languages automaticly. But in Turkish, it's translated word by word. "Kayıt (Post) Yorumu (Comment)" It doesn't means "Post Comment".

It should be "Gönder" (Send) or "Yorumu Kaydet" (Save Comment)

I would like to know whether it's possible to contact Blogger language team or not. Please show me a way.

Regards.

Erhan.
