New Feature: Blog List

Bloggers often feature a list of their favorite blogs, called a “blogroll,” in the sidebar of their own blog. Our latest page element, Blog List, helps you do just that, but we’ve mixed it in with Google Reader to make it even more powerful and useful.

At its most basic, Blog List displays a list of links to your favorite blogs, with an optional icon. If you link to a blog with an Atom or RSS feed, however, the Blog List can show the date of the blog’s last update or even the title and snippet of its most recent post.

You can set the number of blogs to show in the list and whether they should be sorted by update time or alphabetically by blog title.

You add blogs to your Blog List by entering blog or feed URLs directly, or by importing subscriptions from Google Reader. When you add by URL, Blogger will attempt to detect an Atom or RSS feed for it in order to show post and update information. If none is found, the blog will still be added to the Blog List, just as a simple link.

Please try this out! Add a Blog List (Or two! Or more!) to your blog and let us know what you think in the comments. We value your feedback, and will try to incorporate as much as we can before the Blog List goes big-time on www.blogger.com.

Remember: Like all features mentioned on this blog, you must log in to http://draft.blogger.com/ to add a Blog List.

Additional Notes
  • The Blog List writes all links out in HTML so that, unlike JavaScript-based blogrolls, you pass PageRank goodness on to the blogs you link to.
  • The icon next to a feed is taken from the favicon.ico file in the blog’s home directory. We currently do not support the “shortcut icon” link tag.
  • Adding and removing blogs may not invalidate our cached version of your blog. If you’re having trouble seeing your changes, republish a post or make a small settings change to your blog. Update, 2/29: This has been fixed.
  • Some blogs don’t link to their Atom and RSS feeds in a way that we can detect. In these cases, add the feed URL to the Blog List for best results.
  • Only the blog admin who added the Blog List may edit and configure it. Why is that? You’ll find out later...

Wanted to sum up a few minutes of playing around as quick as possible.

1) Cool new feature. Can't wait for XFN support *wink, wink*

2) If I add a blog from Google Reader, then try to rename it from Blogger, it always reverts back to the Google Reader name. If I change the name in Google Reader, it updates the name in blogger. Wish I could call it one thing in Reader and another on my blogroll.

3) Seems if I try to delete more than one blog at a time, it only deletes the last blog I removed from the list. Weird.

Keep up the great work. Now I won't have to use that Pipes thing for this feature ;)

This is a pretty awesome feature - it took me a bit to configure, but then it is a drafts feature so that's to be expected.

I've found that you can only do one type of change to avoid errors, i.e. changing your sorting option vs renaming blog feeds at the same time tends to error out.

As for renaming in general, I can't seem to get my version of the name to stick since it keeps reverting to how the name appears in the feed data.

I had the same 'bugs' as the two previous posters, but SO GLAD you are working on this. I think it will be a GREAT new funtion once those are worked out and will DEFINITELY use it. Right now, I just use a link list for my favorite blogs, but this will be MUCH better!

Thanks for the bug reports and feedback! Keep it coming.

I can't wait to use this feature, but evidently can't yet. When I try to add from Google Reader, even without making changes, I get an error ("Please correct the errors on the form below") but no indication of what that error may be.

dataphage said...

Seems to have broken the "edit layout" interface. I can't see the sections or the "Add a Page Element" link.

Leonardo said...

I agree renaming is not working at all. Also, it does not seem to be updated (new posts in the blogs don't show up). Maybe it is because I added the blogs URLS, not the feeds URL's. I'll try adding the feeds URL's next. Agree that is a great feature though.

Another great feature. Will all of these coming on board, it would be great to add a third column to the pages...

Cool feature, have tried it on my blog, works great, but can the font colour be changed? cos its currently black text on a dark green background, not easy to read.

Laura said...

I like it and I've been wishing for something that would let us run blogrolls through Blogger. But, can you add the feature of listing a blog by title and letting us add or pick up a subtitle or tagline? Also, the font for the past post only seems to come in huge and bold. Can we make it smaller and not bold?

Laura said...

Thank you Blogger people. I wanted to start a blogroll on a theme but kept putting it off cause the software wasn't there for it. Blogroll only lets you have one freebie and Bloglines makes it complicated to just remember how set it up, each time I just try things until I remember what I did last time. Blogger seems to have got it with Blog List. I am goofing around with it and not finding anything that isn't working. Just that thing about cosmetics, being able to change font sizes, colours and etc would make it PERFECT! Thank you for another great feature. This is why I came back from a year of WordPress. :)

Laura said...

It really needs the option of making it a scrolling list too. Tried it today but after working on it awhile I think I will leave Technorati up for now. I think Blog List will be great when it can be adapted more.

Megan said...

I can't get it to work. I click "add to list" or "add a blog to list" and the window goes cloudy for a moment and then rights itself. Too bad. This sounds like a great feature.

Megan said...

Odd. I just logged into my other blog and I can get the feature to work over there. It looks great over there, but I can't get it to work on my main site. I don't get the little pop-up that would allow me to add the blogs I follow.

Marco Bellucci said...

Good feature.
Two things:
1) Blog list is aligned a bit on the right, not in the perfect center of the sidebar.
2) The list does not adapt completely to the template css... (maybe take a look to my blog in order to understand what i'm trying to say: my english isn't perfect, sorry).

Thanks!
Bye!

Hi, I have just add this function to my blog and it looks cool all the way. I have some suggestions to improve this feature:
1. Add an URL for particular post
2. Add a setting to control the snippet length
3. Allow users to set accurate numbers of blog displayed
4. Generate a seperate page for all the blog list
5. Support Better in Shortcut Icon

Thanks for yours attention
Hope to see improvement soon :)

I've just discovered this after coding my own blogroll by hand with links to the relevant .ico files...

Still, I'd like to give this a try. The only downer for me is that the icons displayed will be those of the host, so for bloggers who have linked to a shortcut icon, their link will still feature a default orange logo instead.

Thanks for creating this for us!

washwords said...

thank you so much!!! this is EXACTLY what i was wanted.

And I discovered blogger-in-draft - whoo hoo, this rocks!!!.

One thing that helped me with renaming : no spaces in names. Thank you thank you thank you.

Now, can we customize the fonts on these? ;)

I was able to add the box to my layout, but for whatever reason, I can not add any blogs to the list. I am the ONLY person on my account so can't possibly not be administrator.....any suggestions?

DeeAnne said...

More on the problem I am seeing. I can add the feature no problem. No combination of save, edit, add works for me to put blogs in the list. When I click the add blog button (or field) the screen goes grey for a moment or two then comes back BUT now the screen looks ever so slightly different. It comes back with the "sort" field missing and the "show" list is missing the drop down box.
Hope this helps to clear up the mystery... Oh FYI the problem is the same in IE and FireFox(flock version)

it is repeatable so if someone wants a screen shot I can provide it.

washwords said...

dee anne and others, one thing I noticed is that you have to log out of your existing blog completely - if you're signed in and have it open on ANY tab or window besides the one you're editing, it won't work!

I agree with the other posters that I wish there could be scrolling or set amount of blogs to show AND a way to control the point size and font. When I adjust the "all text" that seems to affect this, it still is bigger than all other text.

thanks, jfa

ren.kat said...

I have been able to open the widget box and type in a url. That's it. The blue band that indicates saving status etc, just keeps waving- for hours if I let it. This happens on all my blogs.

It this feature up and available for everyone?

I also like these 2 ideas (from a poster way upline).

For instance, one blog I've listed doesn't have a feed, so it lists out the entire url; it gets cut off by the sidebar's width limitation. If a line can be added we can just give it the name of the blog, that would be great.

Changing fonts would also help with the width limitation, too. Other than that, this is a really great feature (and something I've been looking for for a while).

As someone else upline posted, now I don't have to worry about using that Pipes thing. :-)

Oh, one other thing...is there a sort function? I don't remember seeing that. I'd like to list the blogs in alphabetical order.

Great widget.

1) Having to click rename after adding a blog is a bit of a pain. Why can't I do this when I add the blog?

2) How can I make list bullets appear to the left instead of images.

This is great. One thing that would make it better is to be able to have it show the last x number of posts for a feed.
I have an aggregated rss feed in Google Reader that I subscribe to. Since it is one feed, it only shows the most recent post. I would like to show the previous 5.

I like this feature a lot! Still, it'd be nice to see it even better integrated with Google Reader. For instance, it'd be really cool if "starred items" appeared longer on the blog list or were automaically topped for a few days, with a little "star icon".

Jos said...

This is a great new feature.

More user control over its' appearance would be my next wish for it..

AND:
I am hoping you will make it 'transportable', so that I can copy an existing "Blog List" on to my other blogs, so that I will not have to do the same job twice...

Eiron Page said...

Auto-refresh of the blog list seems faulty, as mentioned by people above, if indeed such a thing has been implemented. The only way I can update it is to save changes on template design, which is something of a hassle when it should be fully automated. It is good to have an informative blog roll, but it would be better still to have it work as it ought.

Cidão said...

Hi, What about emoticons in blogger posts and comments? You could offer us this feature.

musicobsessive said...

This is potentially a great feature, however there are a few problems:
1. Auto refresh seems a bit patchy and new posts are not coming through.
2. Any blog URL that has a numeric digit in it does not return any posts at all
3. I had one instance of a correct blog URL returning a post that was not part of the specified blog...weird!

Otherwise, a worthwhile addition - hope all the bugs can be ironed out.

Hi folks. Two quick things:

@ONEIDA, et al.: We're looking into the bX codes that are coming from this page element. We apologize for the problems that you've had with your blogs.

I added the blog roll and really like the feature of seeing when the link last posted. Something odd though, two of the links don't update or show the title of their post and I'm wondering why. I've redone it several times.
I also would really like to be able to limit how much of their new post would show. A few words would be enough for me.

I really like this feature. Thanks.

Norfolk Blogger said...

I'd like to be able to use this feature as a blog aggregator so that it does not just show the last posting from each blog in my list but more than that. It would be good if I could have the last five postings from each blog and perhaps be able to set a limit on how many postings it would take from each blog.

Keith a.k.a. K j A M said...

This is a great feature! I've already rolled it out and noticed people picking up on it pretty quick. That being said, it's a little buggy when setting everything up. It crashed on me twice when I was almost complete. Then I went back and just started saving every five or so. I figured out the problem was with sites that don't have a feed. While you're setting it up, it's wise to not select "Snippet of the Most Recent Item". Ultimately, that creates the error, the timeout and everything freezes and/or Explorer just completely closes. Once I did that, I had no further problems and just went back and selected that option after I had saved everything. The problem people are experiencing with the "rename" feature is a direct result of this. I didn't have any problems renaming after deselecting that option. Great job, keep up the good work!

Colleen (CQ in DC / quinncx) said...

I like the new feature, but agree it would be great to have more control over the appearance of the list. It would also be great to be able to import an existing list already on my blog rather than to have to re-enter everything.

Keith a.k.a. K j A M said...

Supposedly it does allow you to import for your own feed, but I didn't find that useful. It picked up three things and one I don't even subscribe to. So, I had to manually enter everything in (see my previous post about the headaches involved). As for it not displaying everything, I believe that's because some sites do not have nor allow feeds for their content. They operate soley on email updates. At least, that makes sense to me. For those still wondering, this is a great feature. Once set up, you and your readers will really appreciate it. One last thing: is this the reason my page now loads much slower than before? If so, that definitely needs to be corrected. Just a suggestion.

Investment n Trading Advisor said...

Nice feature.
But instead of just having a blog name, URL, date-time and snippet, something extra is expected.

I should be able to configure how many recent posts I wish to show on the blog list. Say I add "xyz.blogpsot.com" to my bloglist and I want to show the latest 10 posts for that blog.
For Another blog, I may like show the latest 5 post.

Having this kind of configurability will work wonders.

Thanks,

Blog list is a great feature!

problems:

1. it's aligned somehow like stairs. I don't understand why.

2. it doesn't recognize the blog updates.
f.e. if someone updates his/her blog and he/she is on my blog list, the blog list stays unchanged.
(I have checked "Sort: Most Recently Updated").

I have tried entering the feed URL instead of the usual blog URL - in fact have tried all three feed URLs for each blog - but I get "error on page" when I try, and it won't let me add them

any advice?

Sarah aka Flo said...

Further to my previous comment - I have now finished setting up all my blog rolls.

I have two separate problems - there are 4 blogs which I can add to a blogroll, but they do not pick up the last updated date or post titles (all blogspot blogs, you can see them at the bottom of my "friends" blogroll)

There are also 6 further sites which I cannot add to a blogroll at all - it just gives me errors when I try. 4 are Typepad, 1 is blogspot and the 5th has its own domain name but redirects to a typepad blog. I do not have any trouble using these sites in bloglines or the like.

You can see the 6 sites in a link list at the end of all my blogrolls.

I would very much like to get these remaining 10 blogs working properly in my blogrolls - so will be keenly watching this site for bug fixes / workarounds.

@Sarah aka Flo: Thanks for the detailed report!

I think your problems from a day or so ago were caused by a hiccup on our end that should be resolved by now. Can you try again?

Pete said...

Some more quick responses:

Updating: Re-opening the Blog List and saving it may cause an immediate update, but left alone the Blog List usually updates within 1-3 hours.

It all depends on how fast Google Reader picks up on the changes to the blog.

Showing more items: For these use cases, I'd recommend the "Feed" page element, which lets you add the output of any RSS or Atom feed to your sidebar.

I am currently trying out a Wordpress blog (into which I was able to import all my old posts and my subscriptions) it doesn't allow so many tweaks and java script but it works and support is right there when you need it...thinking of moving all of my blogs there. I may even be willing to pay for the right to change the css.

I am really disappointed in blogger over this whole thing. Very un-responsive.

It's a great idea

I have tried it on one of my blogs, and it accepts some of the urls that I have been inputting but not all (they are all blogger).

Is it because some of the blogs are using old templates?

Please advise

Thanks

For those of you getting mad at blogger because this isn't working right, remember it's in beta. It is there to test and report bugs before it is avaiable and functional to everyone. Switching to wordpress because this doesn't work YET is a stupid move.

@Brett Royal, I'm not mad at blogger, I just wanted to try it out.

It still isn't working on my main blog--can't even get to the setup page anymore. So, I thought I'd try it on another blog (because I have a friend whose blog looks great with this feature in the margin). I have no trouble getting to the set-up page, I just can't get it to let me upload any of my blogroll--either through importing from rss or manually. Anybody else encounter this?

This is my last post on this topic.

1. Yes this is a beta site, but in reality anyone who has a blogger account can use it.

2. It is a mutually beneficial situation as a beta site. We get to try new features ....blogger gets some debugging help.

3. Since we provide input as to bugs, it not unreasonable to expect some type of feedback about the problem or the fix.

4. I first experienced this problem the last week of March when my blog was actually off line for 2 days til I figured out a work around.

5. I was asked for my URL by blogger staff which I provided after having given detailed information about the problem twice before.

6. Since that time more and more people are reporting the same problem.I did not simply report this problem yesterday and get all huffy today.

7. I have been unable to find any information about the status of a fix or if anyone is actually working on it. ...perhaps I missed that and if I did I would like to see it.

My complaint and frustration is the lack of FEEDBACK not the lack of a fix for the bug.

8. Blogging may be a hobby or creative outlet for some of us but for others a broken blog or feature is a more serious matter.

9. Finally, I said that I am .....considering.....moving to Wordpress....and that I am .....researching(trying it out)...while keeping my blogger blogs going.

Thank you for this forum.

All the blogs I put on my list are from Blogger, but only some of them show updates. I try to add the feed url by clicking on "Subscribe to: Posts (Atom)" at the bottom of the blog, copying and pasting the url of the page that comes up next (am I doing that the right way?), but whenever I do, the popup that I add the url to to put it on my blog list just sits and sits, no matter how many times I click "Add" or how many meals I go cook in the meantime. Any suggestions?
