New feature: Search Box

We just added a new feature to Blogger in Draft, the Search Box page element:

It uses Google's Custom Search Engine to dynamically search over your blog's content, as well as anything you've linked to in your blog posts, and even your sidebar-based link lists and blogrolls. In other words, it's really nifty - you can find it in your blog's Template | Page Elements tab, in the "Add a Page Element" popup.

Many thanks to the CSE and Ajax Search API teams for their work on this feature. Comments are enabled for this post, so let us know how it works for you!

This is a pretty nifty tool for Blogger. I wouldn't have implemented Google Ajax Search myself if this tool were in place before. I love this.

There should be more customization on search result page and more search engines (like GvideoSearch) to be added.

Darnell Clayton said...

Quick question. If we already have the Google custom search installed on our blogs, with this new feature run ads on the searches?

And if so, would it be possible to incorporate our AdSense code in order to get a "piece of the pie" from searches? ;-)

Thanks!

This is excellent.

Any ideas what CSS we can use to control the look/feel of the results?

Dave BV. (MzW!!) said...

I agree with justin, I got google ajax search running on my blog and this is amazing. I would switch to this new feature but in muy customized search I have more tabs where to look for. For example news, blogs, and as justin said alos would be great to add video search.

Dave BV. (MzW!!) said...

I forgot to ask, related to the ads that show up "sponsored links". Is this linked to your own AdSense account?

Scott said...

This finally got me to check out Blogger Draft. I too would like to see some control over appearance, color scheme, and branding. I'd rather have the Google logo inside the box than under it (a la code.google.com) and I could do without the "Search" button - the enter key is enough for me :)

Keep up the good work!

This feature is great! I have been wanting to add Google AJAX Search to my blog but I don't know the coding. Now I could add it in seconds. Thanks, Blogger!

However, I got a few suggestions and hope they are going to be implemented before the are officially released:

1. Just like what darnell suggested, could we please be able to add in our own AdSense publisher ID so that we get paid when the ads are clicked?

2. Could there be more customizable options available in the set up menu? Such as the color scheme of the search results? Whether the Google logo is displayed outside the search box or inside the text box? It would be much more easy for users.

3. It would be great if other kinds of Google search are available such as Blog Search, Image Search, etc.

Anyways, thanks for the great feature! I really love it.

This feature is really amazing!
But, why the blog search can't find all results in Chinese?

Marc said...

I'd liek to use the new search box element. But I already have a search box in the Blogger Navbar. Two searchboxes is confusing to users. I'd like the option to disable the one at the top, if I decide to use the AJAX search. You'd get a lot more people using the new one, that way.

Rupesh Mandal said...

I agree with darnell, !Keith and Marc .

Rupesh Mandal said...

one more thing, it increases the loadtime of blog. I am pointing out slow loading of blog since the AJAX search API was developed.

please note this because not every internet user has a broadband connection; atleast in India.

Jason Goldman said...

Great feature! I'm really excited about all the stuff that's getting released on Draft. Two requests for this feature:

1) I'd like to have the search box and its results appear in my sidebar. As it is, if I put the box in my sidebar, the results appear in the main column. This is a bit disjointed.

2) If #1 isn't possible, I think it would be nice to maybe work this functionality into the search box in the navbar as suggested by marc.

3) Some optimization on load time would be good here. There was a pretty noticeable increase in page load when I installed the feature.

Thanks so much!

Jason

DarkUFO said...

To remove the Search at the top/nav bar just add this code.

#navbar-iframe
{
height:0px;
visibility:hidden;
display:none;
}

Marc said...

^^ Is that allowed by Blogger? I thought I heard something about that being against the TOS.

Andy W said...

We very cool, love it. Might replace my current search box.

Stan said...

Where do you add this feature? I click on Add a Page Element, but the resulting window doesn't list Search Box anywhere.

Do I have to apply for a beta program or something?

rOckY said...

I've added the search box and it is pretty cool once it loads.

That's the only problem - load time is significantly slow that I'm not sure if anyone will be able to use the feature given on how long it takes for to initialize after a page refresh.

Wade said...

Ever since I added this search box I get the following error message everytime I pull up my blog:

"AJAX Search API Load Failure: Invalid API Key Supplied"

Not sure what it means or how to correct it.

Any thoughts?

"This Blog" tab: unpractical type of links in the search results — Wow! I found this Blogger Search Box prototype amazing. I really like the custumerizable tabs feature, but I have tow main points of disappointment and frustration.

1) My main frustration has to do with the type of links in the search results display of the "This Blog" tab. The fact the links open in a new window is very annoying. It's seems right to me that the links of the search results for the others tabs open in new windows but for the Blog internal links, opening them in a new window just feel weird and it's not practical.

2) My second frustration has to to with the fact that the "More results >>" link in every tabs open in Google Search pages instead of in the tabs. This also feels weird and unpractical. The open windows just multiplied and it gets very confusing.

Thanks!

Marat said...

Just like Wade I get the same error message when not logged into Blogger Draft:

"AJAX Search API Load Failure: Invalid API Key Supplied"

Any ideas guys?

Thanks

David Edenden said...

Could "Blogger in Draft" post a prominent link to those projects you are working on and those projects not currently being developed for whatever reason.

Also include a "wish list" for people to post ideas.

My wish:

In Archive: Archive Frequency

Have a selection for weekly breakdown for the first month, then monthly following. Similar to the month/year order.

It would help people use the "Archive" more as a "Table of Contents" (I have re-named it as such).

Thanks. New Blogger is a dream!

Pat Hawks said...

It would be cool if, instead of adding another search box to my page, I could add Google AJAX search functionality to the search box in the Blogger Nav Bar.
Also, I would REALLY LOVE IT if the search results used the same layout as the Blogger Nav Bar. It looks really dorky to have it pop up above the page header and logo and stuff.

dataphage said...

Great feature!

I'd like a quick way to add in another domain to search toot though. I have a mini-blog section on the site which is on a sub-domain and I'd like the search box to be able to pick this up which at current it won't.

Two comments:

1. I was hoping that the Adsense code I had set up in my first Google Search Box would be brought over to the new one - hopefully this is a feature that will be enabled... that is, I can't seem to figure out where I can enable it...
2. I happened to have digg.com on my links, and if I search for a word on the 'outgoing links' option, or whatever, I get all digg.com links, several pages worth before any results from my other outgoing links... has anyone else had this issue?

Now, I can change the template of the result. Just "expand widget template" and edit CSS part inside this widget.

The search box also doesn't seem to capture ALL of the items it's looking for. I searched my blog for the word "wrestling", which was in my very 1st post back in 2003. But it doesn't appear in the search box results. The search box seems to only go back to 2005. Any chance of getting this new feature to include ALL our content? It's sort of useless without the ability to search your entire blog.

About Postcards said...

Superb !

My thoughts concurr with many of the above but I'll list them anyway.

1. Adsense

2. Opening found pages from the blog in a new window seems wrong / unatural and I suspect it will put people off. If the found page is from 'this blog' then it would be better to see it replace the currently viewed page. If the found page is from outside 'this blog' then a new window is right / natural.

3. Load time. When limited to searching 'this blog' it's ok, when opened up to include links from this blog it seems to crawl. This is made worse by the repeated opening of new windows, each with their new load time.

4. It duplicates the navbar searchbox (though has more function). It would nice to be able to either turn off the search box on the navbar (preferred). or to have the new search replace the navbar search.

5. The reset/close icon could be a little bit moire prominent and some alt text when hovered over it might help..

Omar Basawad said...

It keeps getting better! This is a very useful tool; though slow now, I hope it will load faster later.

I even turned off searching the web to see if it would help the problem is still there. Does anyone else have this problem

Always about draft features...
when will Blogger implement a real "summary" solution for the blogs' home page, like Wordpress blogs have?

Blogger help pages contain wrong informations/solutions about that issue, there are only some hacks around the web, but there is not a proper and official way to create a summary yet.
I'd like to have a solution which lets me choose when use the summary feature and when go with the usual long full post way.

I think having the chance of creating a summary makes blogs's home page much more attracting, and it would probably be an easy thing to fix compared to some features I read about here...

Thanks :-)

Oh amd why can't you use your search history with the blog search?

Kourosh Eslamzade said...

Hi
It's extremly nice and useful feature and I used it on weblogcrawler.blogspot.com for a few days.
1-Today I noticed that if URL has WWW like www.weblogcrawler.blogspot it return a popup which says
"invalid search API..."
Because of this I could't use it anymore.
2- There is some irregularities before loading on top of the posts and the post shakes and is replaced a little.
3- I would suggest Google blog Search instead of web search.
4- I could customize it fully but I didn't know how to control the number of search results displayed.
5- If we use it there would be 2 search box which I think is unneccessary and it also increases the loading time.
However, Blooger in draft and this blog is wonderful and I am waiting for new features!
thanks.

Love the option but a couple of suggestions.

Search this blog function doesn't search the labels for each post. If I search for a word that is not in the title or post body, but it is a label for that post, it doesn't show up. I think it should.

Also, more options for the search please e.g. Google News, Google Video, etc. would be nice on top of existing.

My Blogger blog is quite popular in my niche and I don't want to leave, but some of those WordPress features would be huge. You guys can certainly replicate (and surpass) that WP functionality, can't you?

Would it be possible to create moving sliders of picutres in blogs posts using the blog url or feed url... could be a great boon for many photoblogs

Robert Seddon said...

I've encountered a bug which I imagine involves non-alphanumeric characters in post titles. Using the search box to search my blog for 'romhacking' correctly brings up http://faceofthemoon.blogspot.com/2007/10/philosophynet-is-available-alas-for_06.html but the actual link is to http://faceofthemoon.blogspot.com/2007/10/philosophynet-is-available-alas-for.html -- which won't work because of the missing '_06'.

The post's title is 'Philosophy.net Is Available; Alas, for £10,000'. The pound symbol was entered using the corresponding keyboard key, i.e. it isn't '£'.

Robert Seddon said...

And the all-important ends of the URLs vanish... (Cut-and-paste into a text editor will reveal them, though.)

It's also tending not to work in the preview mode in template configuration; mostly that leads to an 'unable to process your request' error.

This I love!

Ive had this setup on my blog for a while now and it originally worked very well, then it stopped working and a search just reloaded the page like other people were getting. Now they have "fixed it" it returns some results but when I search for key words that I know are posted on my blog it sometimes doesnt find anything at all or returns one result when there should be more than 10.

Done some tests to try and find a trend but it seems very random :-/

The search result using the Search Box is not showing everything that it should find. Compare to the old search and there is a big difference. Sometimes nothing is found even though evidently there should be a result. No Results or not a complete result.

Just deleted my comment, because I forgot I had asked the same thing earlier. This brings up a different issue. Presumably the purpose of Blogger-in-Draft isn't just to try out new features but also get user feedback. I guess you're getting that, but don't you think it would help if you interacted with your users too? It's a damn frustrating experience commenting here and getting no reply from a member of the Blogger team. Perhaps the engineers are too busy. But presumably someone there is supposed to be dealing with the public. Hello?

I just did a comparision on two searches and found the following confirming that this search still is not good. The problem is probably not so much related to this Search Box but it's all Google and the blog search should really be fixed.
10 found using Google Search compared to Google Blog Search that only finds 3. Searching within Blogger 8 posts are found and is the correct because two of the first result are from monthly archives and reported twice.

I think the idea was highly practical and necessary but the design is poor. There are times when the sidebar literally has to "load" the search feature interface, and this can take some time. The search feature itself doesn't find the majority of posts from a popular keyword but the click for "more results" does. More results should simply display more results within the same page without taking a viewer outside of the current blog to further promote Google's own search engine(despite the fact that even the shiny Blog Search feature states outright 'Powered By Google').

I understand this a draft feature, so I hope the kinks can be worked out. It's a valuable feature for viewers of any blog. Hell, even us blog-owners would have a way of quickly and accurately finding one of our own stories without having to log into our accounts and search the "hard way."

Then again, maybe I'm just being critical.

One more question, is it possible to resize the searchbox (say 20) so it fits the sidebar?

I love the blogger in draft feature and know I will be using it when travel or other committments make it difficult to find blogtime. That doesn't actually help me get my regular dose of course, but my readers may not even realise I'm not really there - hmmm, that didn't come out quite the way ...

I can't believe this is still not available for regular Blogger. Why?

Pandora's Float said...

I love the search-blog widget. I've put it on my blog twice but, it does NOT return any results! The search tool in the navigation bar does.

Any ideas why one would work and the other not?

Pete said...

Pandora's Float: The Search Box page element uses Google's web index (the same as on google.com), restricted to your blog. This may have less coverage than the navbar search box, which gets its results directly from the Blogger database.

How come when searching it doesn't find anything on certain keywords, but if I go to Google and enter something like:

"My term" site:myblog.blogspot.com

It finds stuff? What is the difference?

It would be nice if this worked the same as doing something like this at www.google.com.

"My term" site:myblog.blogspot.com

But it doesn't.

Some suggestions?

a) Site meter to track usage and IP addresses, and allow to block them if needed.

b) In the dashboard editor, the ability to select multiple labels to zero in on items, same on the blog itself. Instead of being able to select 1 label only, multiple labels would be good, like LABELA+LABELB+LABELC to help drill down.

c) In the editor, the ability to delete multiple items at once.

d) Ability to hide some items, viewable by only users you chose to allow to view an item.

e) An enhancement to allow you to show items without a label, if any.

f) More 3 column templates and styles.

g) Option to invite other editors, but for only certain labels.

h) Fix the export/import for huge files, and also to export/import comments, templates and blog items.

This is just a few suggestions.

Well, the search has been around for a while so I tried to install it and guess what? The search doesn't work very well at all. For example if you do a search of "Robert Mitchum" at my blog, you get no listings (there are dozens of mentions of Robert Mitchum on my blog). When you search just Mitchum you get a few but not nearly all the posts. I can't believe this search is being run by Google!

I have the same problem as Steve-O...the search box in the banner at the top is far more effective, the new search feature misses lots of stuff.

JTB World said...

Why the silence from Google on this. Are they not a search company? This is a really OLD BIG issue.

Steve-O said...

Hello? Google? Gonna fix this one or should we forget about it?

Bryan Scott said...

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who's finding the search feature to be quite ineffective at delivering complete and thorough results, but obviously disappointed that the problem hasn't been dealt with!

You have to log in via http://draft.blogger.com/home and make it as your default dashboard. Then add your gadget the usual way. The Searchbox gadget will appear

I guess it doesn't work for highly customized templates, because I tried it on a normal blogger template (Minima Lefty) and it worked fine. But when I tried it on my custom-made template, it never works. It only shows the searches from the web, not my blog or any of the other tabs this widget offers.

I put it in. This works on my daughter's blog but not on mine. When I type in searches, it can never find even labeled words on my blog.
It doesn't seem to have a problem with links from my blog :(
Yes. All options are checked in my searchbox preferences.

I have it on my site now and it works!

A few questions... at my site www.noiroftheweek.com when I do a search the urls come up as the blogger address http://noiroftheweek.blogspot.com/ which is the old address before I forwarded it.

Also, I see an option to search Noir of the Week Master List. What is this? and why does nothing ever come up when I use this search option?

Thanks for fixing the search though. It seems incredibly fast and powerful.

Cool feature, the only problem I have is that it searches everythin besides my blog!! When I tested it with a word that is defenitely used in my posts, it gives no results for my blog (only for all the other links etc.) Did I do something wrong?

I doesn't work quite well on my blogs, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

It would be better if this search box had the same feature of "edit posts" search box so that we can find all of our published posts related to a key word.

I really want to have a search box like that on my blogs. For examples, I create a blog of recipes, which has a collection of more than 6 thousands of recipes. How can I find my published recipes related to only a key word such as tomato.

The search box in the edit posts feature can only search a key word in 5000 most recent posts. I'm willing to pay for having this feature that can search in my entire blog, no matter how many posts there are.

Please tell me what to do, thank you!
