Updates about Video Upload

Thanks to all who commented about Blogger in draft’s video upload feature! It’s been almost a week now, so here are some responses:

Bugs: Autoplay on IE6, spaces in filenames
We fixed the autoplay problem with Internet Explorer, so now videos will only play when your visitors click on them. We also fixed the error that occurs when you upload a video with spaces in the filename.

Unable to see the video upload icon
Make sure that you’re logging in to http://draft.blogger.com/ and using either Firefox or Internet Explorer. Because video upload is tied to Blogger’s “Compose mode” rich text editor, it is not supported in Safari or Opera.

MP3 / Audio uploading
Thanks for the inquiries about this, but it’s not in scope for the video uploading feature.

Video podcasting
Stay tuned.

Thanks Google!

Now I have yet another reason not to switch to WordPress (which was becoming very tempting lately).

Keep up the good work! And LONG LIVE BLOGGER!!!

PS

Any news yet on having a "record from desktop" option like YouTube has? (as it may save on uploading time for those personal video blogging bloggers).

Apparently it IS supported in the Safari 3 beta, because I just started noticing compose mode after installing it a few days ago. Just an FYI.

I asked a question at the thread at Google Blogger Help group, but the question still hasm't been addressed. My question:

Videos are pretty big files. Does Blogger count them with the rest of the content and the photos for the limit, and if so, would the limit remain the same? If so, if we habitually upload videos, we are going to hit the limit pretty fast.

To Peter: That would be a negative. Last I checked, they are uploaded to Google Video (although not indexed by the system).

You can always check out your Picasa Album to verify this, although you should not see any video's (unless you put them up there via Picasa).

MP3 / Audio uploading - I've figured out a basic workaround to upload an MP3 by simply combining it with a photo to turn it into a video.

But I'd be interested to know about the uploading issue - I notice others have had the problem too where a file of more than about 4 MB just won't upload. Look forward to more news on this sometime?

Cheers

I was thinking of switching to wordpress also but now have changed my mind. The audio workaround sounds interesting--but bulky.

FEATURE REQUEST:

1. Be able to choose an image for your video. This would be the image you see until you click the play button.

2. Fullscreen support

3. Remove the text "Blogger" and just leave the orange logo that is on the right-hand side of the video player (more space efficient).

4. Change the volume control to a vertical pop-up control (more space efficient).

RE: MP3 / Audio uploading

You can change the object height to 27px, this will only show the controls and hide the placeholder video.

As a "workaround" it works.

I just created my blog yesterday and noticed that you could only post pix not videos...come back a day later and find out about "Draft". I created a draft blog and posted a 4 meg video file (wmv format)...and it worked like a charm...fast too. Can't wait 'til this moves into production.

I would agree that being able to change the viewer size would be useful- kind of like how YouTube lets you full screen and some other places let you change the flash player to 2x.

Thumbnail choice would be great as well. Facebook is currently making this feature available for their video upload, and it's really nice so that you can at least have somewhat of a choice of what thumbnail is shown for your video.

Keep up the good work!

Not sure about how relevant this is about this particular feature, but it's a feature I'd love to use in conjunction with Video Upload:

What about a piece of downloadable software that would encode the video into Google Video format, so that converting/compressing can be done BEFORE the massive upload? Not sure how many video editing programs support encoding into Flash video.

I can see this being useful in a situation like mine; my blog is about a road trip to places where Internet connections might not be the fastest. Therefore, I'd love to be able to convert the video offline, then upload it after it's compressed and instantly ready for Google Video.

Can you add support for uploading Ogg Theora and Matroska videos?

I just tried to upload a video and it did not work. I wonder if it is an unsupported file type. What file types are supported? I tried a .VOB file. There are .BUP and .IFO files also on the disk that has the video, but I think the .VOB files are actually the video files.

Lisa Twede said...

OH! The file name has .VOB, but under file type it says MPEG file. I'll try it again and if I get an error, I'll post the error.

You should document somewhere (like when you click on "Video" in the blog editing window) that the maximum video upload size is 100Mb.

Good idea - if it worked. Have wasted hours on 3 attempts to upload a video. Will have a serious look at WSordpress.

I have been trying for several days to post a video. But, after loading, all I get is a box where the video should be and a little box in the upper left corner with a red "x" in it. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

I like the idea of being automatically saved in Draft ..but it would be really great if the post could be published with a different date showing..sometimes I prepare a blog earlier than needed and would like to publish it on a given date in the near future. Can this be looked into....PLEASE.

Hi all. Thanks for your comments! Since these features have moved out of draft and on to the main Blogger, I'm going to close the comments on this post.

Please continue the conversation over at the Blogger Help Group.
