Introducing Blogger in draft and video upload

Today we're announcing an exciting new feature, video upload, and an exciting new place to use it: Blogger in draft. We’re excited.

You can think of draft as Blogger’s laboratory: it has features that we’re playing around with, trying out, and aren’t ready to “publish” to the main site.

Our first drafted feature is video upload. We’ve added a new button to the post editor () that pops up a dialog you can use to upload a video right into your blog post. If you have an Akita and a hat, you could make something that looks like this:

video

The comments are open, so let us know what you think! Also read the video upload FAQ for even more information.

Curious about Blogger in draft? We wrote a FAQ about that, too.

Update, 6/20: Read the latest blog post for responses to your feedback.
Update, 6/22: Share your videos in the comments for this blog post.

This looks great ... I have been waiting for this to arrive..Thanks!I would also like to be able to enable podcasting?

How about a way to mobile blog videos? The thing I take the largest amount of video on is my camera phone, so how about adding the same functionality as it is with pictures? Eh? Eh?

Sin City Mad Baker said...

I am totally excited about this...

It will breath life into my blog!

Rohit Malik said...

good initiative with 'blogger in draft' & 'video upload' feature. 'audio upload' must also be there with support to mp3 / wma / wav etc.
That would further make publishing a media rich blog easy.

Jason Goldman said...

Hooray for Tomo!

If he can make the thing where I can record video directly from the browser, that'd be hot.

Genç Ülküdaş said...

That's a good idea! İ liked it.

Dinorider d'Andoandor said...

this is one of the coolest ideas I've heard from blogger recently.... however I wasn´t that happy when I wanted to upload a 9MB video and saw nothing, I tried it twice.. the second time I had been waiting for more than 2hours and a half.. is the server that busy?

Darnell Clayton said...

Good idea Blogger Team, but its sooo sloooowwww!

As of this writing, the video still has not uploaded. Perhaps you should consider switching to YouTube instead of Google Video for your video platform of choice?

Dido Donkey said...

Like it a lot!!! Let us know once the beta is over, I have some video uploads in queue.

Also,as already thoguht of, would be great help if there are audio uploads available which could be kind of bacground music to the blog & take lesser space as well...

Mike said...

uhm hello blog people. We come in peace. We are interested in freedome of speach, which uhm this site now provides even more of. So you blog people should connect with the USA and other freedome loving countries as deeply as possible. Otherwise, the draft page will be a problem. You see, the public see's you now. A lot of people are using this blogger site. Take that into deep, careful, and fair consideration. As long as there isn't any nudity, swearing, or bodily dehabilitating harm avocated against a particular person or persons on a site that site should be allowed to run. Otherwise people will be different in other areas and you can't help that at a certain point.

Banateanu, are you in the "Draft" site (blue instead of orange logo)? It seems every revisit you always start at the regular site.

I can't wait! Have to jump through hoops to upload video now.

MathiasTCK said...

Hey what's blogger doing in mobile right now?

Zeinobia said...

Thanks you so so much , I wish too that you integrate youtube the same way vox did it to add the videos there easily from there

Paula Neal Mooney said...

Where is the new button? Am I the only one who doesn't see it?

I don't see a button either - and I did switch to the new blogger pretty early. What am I missing?

canary said...

Hey, got it now! Pushed New Post and up it came. Great idea!

deheasytunes said...

Bravo... When this feature will be released? And also I hope for audio/mp3 upload (I use the blog for online music teaching)

i'm with Mongo, if this goes mobile for cellphones, this will be off the hook. oooh punny.

the only thing i see being an issue are the mobile filetypes that come off of the mobiles... but you guys are google and stuff so no worries?

Golfgal said...

Yes! I love it...keep these great features coming!

Miguel Vera said...

Thanks for this. I so needed new options for blogging. I was tempted to change to other blogs but for some reason I'm attached to Blogger, I had the feeling that something new was coming and this is it. Thanks again and congrats!

lba said...

thanks for this great feature. i've been waiting for this!

Mr. Malley said...

Great feature. However, I can see this quickly getting blogger banned in my school district, thus neutralizing it as a tool for my students.

You folks at blogger think of any ways to combat their over cautiousness?

phatcatholic said...

Can you please add the option of adding static pages to a blog, like most wordpress blogs can? If blogger had that, I would be sold on blogger.

pencil said...

Great feature!
It will be better if we can insert videos that have already been uploaded in Google video or youtube.

I was able to sucessfully upload a 10.8 MB video file, however whenever I opened up my blog the video would start playing automatically. I've since deleted the post that contained the video because I'm afraid that my non-broadband readers and those with slow connections will have problems loading my page. Can this be fixed? Or is there a way to stop this from happening with HTML code?

LividStudio said...

Sounds good, but what you really need is a button to add a poll to your blog if you choose. Check out Daily Kos to get the idea.

Also, when I try to use draft.blogger.com and try to upload a video, it just endlessly tries to upload it until I get an error message that pops up. Fix it fast so we can use it!

Simos said...

It's great but we would like to have the possibility to publish post date entries. That means we cannot always be in the PC but we would like to have the possibility to publish in certain times. So we not in Blogger? I think it's very easy to do it! You are the masters!

I guess the video upload is gonna need a way of reporting and removing offensive and copyrighted content.

I know google knows the game as they had already done it with youtube and googlevideos.

HI, I have put up three videos on a post in my blog at http://mumbaibuzz.blogspot.com/ The issue I am experiencing is that when I open the blog in Internet Explorer, all 3 videos start playing on their own without even clicking on 'play'. I don't seem to be experiencing any issues with Firefox though. I am using IE 6 service pack 2 and Firefox 2.0.4. Please see if you can fix this issue at the earliest as any visitors would no doubt find 3 videos playing simulatenously, irritating. Thank you.

Congratulations on the draft site - and thank you for continuing to enrich the platform.

Will the 2Gb total site limit recently imposed on photo uploads also be applied to videos? If so, I suspect that video and other media-rich forms of content will only be usable in very small doses.

Any thoughts on perhaps loosening the restrictions? Otherwise, it'll still make more sense to use third-party services to ensure we don't max out our Blogger accounts.

poker75 said...

sweet. i was actually wondering if you guys would ever enable video upload and BEHOLD! THOU HATH DONE IT.

I don't see the video upload button on my OSX 10.4.9, in either Safari or Firefox. Also I have two suggestions:
1. If we upload QT or MPEG4 H.264, please don't re-encode to Flash, you will kill the quality. Revver and blip.tv don't do this.
2. Have a player like blip.tv's Thumbnail Flipper. That is, just generate an image of the video. When you click on it, it will play. Look at my test "QT Video from blip.tv (thumbnail flipper) in

If you enable the upload of sound files, internet radio will have a whole new meaning.

Mike said...

this might interest you.

Someday the need for search engines may disapear as browzer technology advances. Hence you will be stuck with blogging as your primary business. There are already softwares being developed to search the net independantly. Now blogging, thats not so easy to duplicate. You need to think ahead of what will happen when personal computers become powerful enough to single handedly host many sites at once. It will effect the role of search engines and blogging.

solution for you. Blog and browzer integration is the future. You have the blogging tech. Browzers have the independance yet the still depend on a company to make them. Just remember someday blogs and browzers will be one. Internet based search engines will give place to browzer search engines.

bottom line. start working on browzer with blog capacity. It is the future. You just keep the blogger site going . . . for now. But latter think . . Google browzer + blogger. firefox is aking the leage in browzers so ask them.

Dinorider d'Andoandor said...

are there systems requirements for this?

I say this because I use Windows98 and Firefox 2.0.0.4 and my uploads are never completed, I tried to upload a 450KB video and the upload never finished

for those thancan see that, the button you are looking for can be found in the dashboard page

Dr.Vishaal Bhat said...

Ahem ! I am one of the early adopters. But there seems to be a problem. The videos are getting added alright, but each time i publish, there is a post which is saved as a draft. So now i have two videos uploaded and two stored as drafts. I am not able to delete the Drafts. wonder whether any one else has such problems.

It's at this blog: http://mahe-manipal-university.blogspot.com

The error code i get is :bX-kb029e

The draft page loads faster and looks much more simplistic. Why not make it more consistent with other Google services such as Gmail and Google Reader?

will somone tell me what Googles policy is on custom created (html/javascript) software such as a drop down menu? I made a complete drop down menu. No dirivation. It is completely my own creation. What is Google's policy on this? They talk about SERVICES and I am not sure exactly what they mean when it comes to this kind of thing.

RADIANT GUY said...

I can't wait to try the video feature :O

Google keep doing great stuff!

Suzanne said...

It's cool and fun HOWEVER I don't think the readers will like the fact that the video's start automatically. Isn't there a way the reader can control when the video starts to play?

Jim said...

It works like a charm except: The video I uploaded starts playing on its own; I'd much prefer that the embedded player default to pause mode, so my readers can choose when to play it on their own.

Pam S. said...

Same problem as mentioned by Raj--the video starts immediately playing and when I uploaded 3 videos in 3 separate posts, all were playing at the same time and it took a LONG time to get them to stop. What I noticed, though, is that this problem did not happen on my husband's computer (which is newer than mine, although we both use Windows 2003).

Also, when I went back to edit something in an entry with the video in it (e.g. the title), it has an error message.

I like this new feature and am looking forward to your working all the bugs out! Thanks.

Love the feature, but I'll echo the concerns of others here re: the videos automatically playing on load. It'd be much better to have them wait for a "play" command from visitors. This is an easy fix in Flash, so I hope you guys can make it soon.

Adam said...

The ability to add video is welcome. I tested it out on my blog http://www.adamok.net and it works great.

I guess bloggers would want an option to resize the video to fit different layouts. I am not sure whether it was due to my connection, but loading the same video took a bit longer as compared to YouTube.

Chris said...

Any chance of an audio upload for podcasting?

NoisyV said...

I think there is a compression issue with the audio. My movie is a .mov and when I take a listen to the original file, it sounds fine, but when I upload it via the tool, there's a ton of white noise.

Golden Silence said...

There should be an upload progress meter along with this, letting you know how long it'd take to upload and how far you are in uploading. I started uploading a video ten minutes ago which is still loading as I type this. I have no clue as to how long it will take because of the missing progress meter.

Mark IV said...

cool... it looks really great... can we have a pre-load option? will it eat bandwidth as soon as the page is opened or would the users have to click in to start the streaming?

Avanti said...

how do you take a video from youtube and put it in your blog?

Andy said...

Just tried this and the quality is far superior to YouTube!

I'm guessing the file is converted to .flv as it seems to be a Flash player, but the quality's very close to the (relatively) hi-res .wmv original.

Superb!!!

To Avanti, there's an online .flv converter at www.vixy.net, and its free! That'll do the trick.

I know I know, it's still in draft, but I do look forward to a feature that lets me know how much of the file (%percentage) is uploaded. I've been publishing this post for over an hour! (Maybe that's normal for video uploaded, it is around 46MB. I wouldn't be surprised if my internet service provider (ISP) cut me off by the end of all this upload lol. I'm giving it about 10 more minutes then I'm cutting it off, because I'm getting sleepy. Be right back (I say that so you know I've left in the middle of the post). Back, ok appx 10 minutes went by. Now what? I'm sleepy and have no idea how fast the file is uploading.

Maybe it's taking so long because of a Javascript error... Details:

I'm using I.E. for this post

Javascript Error
Line 332
Char 12
Error 'this.cleanData_' is null or not an object
Code: 0
URL http://draft.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=11847027

Actions I took besides typing/copy paste in this post were previewing and hiding (multiple times), then clicking save a few times.

I've been playing with this a little today, some errors, some delay, but some were quick and painless. The current video is a short, shakey clip of horses from a local park. Except, my blog loads and looks fine, but then adds visible html before the video.

I left all of the code alone and didn't change anything. Hmmm...
Any ideas? By the way, I use a classic template.

I am quite interested in this. I am just learning how to use all my video editing features on my computer, so I am a bit of a OCD with videos of late. I have been hoping for this. I like Google Video and YouTube, but the wait for the video to activate from download to view on blog can be an age.
I am sure it would be better for Blogger not to have so many outside things being fed through the blog anyhow. Even if they all are under the same umbrella.
I would really also like how it would eliminate that whole 3rd party commenting I get in email from the Google Video or YouTube sites. It would be great to just have one set of comments come to my email.
Thanks for doin this little earlybird peek at stuff.

Hi, would be great to have the ability to record directly a video in your own blog with your webcam. Like facebook does (Video app), since flash allows to do this.. and the file wouldn't be huge to store on the blog itself.

For example, if you're on a trip and go to a cybercafe you can't always plugin your camera to put a video on your blog (or the connection could be very slow..). But you could use the webcam on that computer to post a little video.

I just started using the video upload for the time I was in Mexico during Hurricane Dean and my blog only shows a box with an x in it. Could you give me a suggestion on what is wrong?

Mark Seymour said...

I switched to Blogger-in-draft, but fail to get the video upload button in a new post.
Can't figure out what, if anything, I'm doing wrong.
This does run under Safari v2.0.4, right?
If not, shame on you.

I uploaded my video which plays great in preview prior to publishing, but once I publish and try to view on my blog, I only see a box with an x in the upper corner. Anybody know if this is being worked on?

Kate said...

Solution for those suffering from the "x" factor:
I had this problem, too. The following worked for me.

When you are editing or drafting your post, be sure that you are in "Compose" mode; not "Edit Html" mode (the two tabs at the top left of the draft post) when uploading your video and that you publish the post while in Compose mode.

Thank you so much, Kate. I lost a lot of time with fixing the unvisible player in the browsing mode yesterday and the solution is so easy.

I actually needed to upload an audio podcast, but Blogger does not support it. So I have created my first video (in Windows Movie Maker) by adding a picture to the mp3 audio track.

Does anybody know about better/faster solution? Thanks!

Hello,
I have a 94M video that I've been trying to upload all week to no avail. The status gets to "Uploading video (94M of 94M)" when it just hangs, and eventually the '94M' disappears so it just says "Uploading video ( of )". Anyone have any ideas? I'm at a loss and am totally bummed!

Are there any particular qualifications that your computer or internet connection need to meet in order to be able to upload videos? The icon that is supposed to be next the the picture icon doesn't even show up when I write new posts. Why?

Hi all. Thanks for your comments! Since this feature has moved out of draft and on to the main Blogger, I'm going to close the comments on this post.
