Enclosures and Video Podcasting

The other feature launched to Blogger in draft today is support for enclosure links. If you haven’t heard of “enclosures” before, they’re the bits of info in Atom and RSS feeds that make podcasting possible. With the new enclosure links UI, you can turn your blog into a podcast quite easily.

To turn on enclosure links, just go to Settings > Formatting and set the “Show Link fields” option to “Yes.” This will add the enclosure link fields to your post editor. From there, just paste in the URLs of your recorded media, and your blog will instantly become a podcast.

Here’s a quick video showing how to get the enclosure links to show up:

video

That’s all very well and good, but we’ve gone a step further by hooking enclosure support in to Blogger in draft’s flagship feature, video upload. Starting today, we’re automatically adding enclosure information for Blogger video uploads, so your blog with video has instantly become a video podcast. Your readers can watch your videos on your blog with the Flash player, or they can subscribe to your videos with their favorite podcatcher.

Videos are provided for download in MP4 format, so they’ll play great on an iPod (or iPhone, but we haven’t tested that quite… yet…), as well as tons of other places.

Watch how we can turn our favorite video upload example video into a video podcast in this video:

video

We’re not 100% versed in podcasting ourselves (those guys left), so this is an area where we’re really listening to you for advice. Is there more metadata you’d like us to collect and provide in the feed? How’s the interface? Slick or merely functional? Podcasting pros: any tips for people just starting out? Where do you host your audio or video?

Speak your mind in the comments!

(Of course, since we’ve been uploading these demo videos with enclosure support, that means that this blog is now a video podcast. Perhaps you’d like to subscribe in iTunes?)

Some technical notes:
  • Blogger supports adding multiple enclosures to a post, but for maximum compatibility with popular podcatchers, you may only want to include one enclosure per post.
  • By default, Blogger feeds are in Atom format. If certain podcatchers require RSS 2.0 format, have them subscribe to http://yourblog.blogspot.com/rss.xml.
  • We auto-detect the MIME Type for common podcasting file extensions. You probably want to leave this alone unless you’re really sure what you’re doing. (Did we miss a file extension that you use? Tell us in the comments.)
  • If you don’t have the enclosure links visible (i.e. “Show Link fields” is set to “No”), we auto-add and auto-delete the enclosure links for your video uploads. If you do have the enclosure links visible, we’ll auto-add but not auto-delete.
  • Due propers to my hometown pals at Ambrosia Software for adding Intel support to Snapz Pro X, which was used to record the demo videos.

Man, would it be sweet if there were a way to import all of my YouTube/Google videos to Blogger.
LOVE the Blogger branded vid player and the enclosures. Is there no way to use these with the videos I've already uploaded to Google?
Also, it would be cool if I had the option of letting Google index my videos. Why shouldn't my videos pop up in search results?

mp4? ok fair enough, that can be grabbed by zune software.

and glad to see you finally did something good with the link field, i remmeber all the creative things the Bleet used to with it.

The new feature sounds good, though I believe it should be possible to upload audio as well as uploading video. It seems strange that Blogger supports video uploading, but it doesn't support audio uploading. Perhaps this can be developed as part of Blogger in Draft.

Love the new feature, however the video's do not show up in Google Reader.

Is there a way you could talk to the GReader team about "hookin' up a blogger?" ;-)

Thanks Google!

Should of bought Odeo when you had the chance - audio podcasting would have been a snip to implement with their kit!

inre audio - why not be able to upload it like video? is this going to change?

darnell: CW just e-mailed me to let me know that they've whitelisted the Blogger video player, so it should be visible in Reader now.

Audio is easy enough to upload...simply import the audio into any video creation software and export the audio as a movie...you could just have the black screen or perhaps take the 10 seconds it would require to add a picture. Then simply upload the newly created video as you would any other video. I've done this with some of my original music on Facebook, and am going to do it on Blogger as well.

The reason Blogger and and other blog sites don't allow audio upload is because of the legal ramifications involved. If you're going to upload audio, make sure it's either your original music or that you have permission from the copyright holder to do so.

I noticed on the Upload Tutorial video that at the bottom of the new post is some sort of 'subscribe' link- how exactly do you generate that? Can Blogger generate it, or does it have to manually done? I know you can subscribe through the feeds in Firefox's browser bar, but I would like to be able to put that subscribe link there.

Another question- Something funny is happening when iTunes downloads the video from the podcast. I have a video on my page right now that plays fine in the browser, but when I download it in iTunes, it skips a lot. Any idea why? However, for another video I posted it was fine both in the browser and in iTunes. I exported both of them from Final Cut Pro as MP4s using the exact same settings.

I've got stacks of youtube vids embedded in my blog, up to 20 in a post. As you read an article you can watch the relevant vid as you progress, whether mine or a youtube one, without leaving the post. I also have related pics in the articles, sometimes stills from the vid, if you just want a quick browse, or to prompt people to watch the vid.

I'm finding the combination of text pics and vids, works really well. You can have a quick read, (the translation tools mean I'm getting people from non english speaking countries visiting a lot too), or a long sit back have a coffee and be entertained for half an hour type visits.

Basically it's a multimedia article.

If I were to upload my vids just to blogger I'd miss out on 90% of my views, which are on youtube, and miss out on people following up the YT vid with a visit to my blog.

By embedding YT on blogger I get all in one go, and access to the YT library.

I embed MP3's of my music and article interviews etc from esnips as well, mainly because it has a nice little embed player. So MP3 upload on blogger would be a plus.

All vids and MP3's can be downloaded with Firefox easily if people want to.

But I'm more interested in people staying on my blog to view the vids than leaving. It prompts people to explore my other posts.

I've been embedding audio and video manually for many months now on the A-Train Hockey Vlog and it sure would be nice to use the enclosure feature, but even though I have set the "Show Link" field to "yes," the template is still not prompting me. What am I missing?

Phreeze said...

Sorry, my bad. I wasn't logged into draft.blogger.com. Now that I have, I notice it might be nice to wrap text around the uploaded blogger video. Other than that, nice feature so far. Thanks!

great. now if you'd all just support tackbacks like wordpress! :)

I then would have the perfect blog.

To Pete: Thanks Pete! (and CW too!).

For those wanting Audio: There is a work-a-round for audio, although if I were you I would simply upload the file to Odeo.com which was created by the Blogger Founder and former Googler Evhead.

I think you mean "trackbacks," and if so I hope Blogger never adds these to blog*spot as it is often abused by spammers.

Linkbacks force the other blogs to link towards your site, and IMHO are much more effective.

Pat Hawks said...

The Populist: Doooode, Linkbacks are better than Trackbacks for one huge reason, there are no extra steps. Google automatically detects the links and puts a linkback on your blog. No messy extra URLs to remember. No (or limited) link spam.

But if you really want trackbacks, try Haloscan.

I uploaded 3 videos. I suscribed to the vid-cast in iTunes. My feed shows up as do all the videos. The first video download, but the second 2 did not, there was an error. I followed the same procedure for each video. Is there a problem with the auto enclosures or did I mess up some how?

Pizzscn said...

I don't see a Video upload button

Kathe said...

I love the video uploading, and the Blogger media player for the videos.
I agree with senior in that audio uploading would be awesome as well. I probably won't use those features all that often, but it'd be nice to have the option to do so.

I tried to enclose an mp3 audio podcast, but when I publish my blog it doesn't show. When I go back to edit, it shows the mp3 url address but it doesn't appear in my page. Is it supposed to be invisible?

I couldn't find video upload button in posting section

The Ploogle said...

Man, this is great! Just one thing...

To have a podcast in iTunes, you need to be able to have certain tags, for example, a special image tag (it wont let me put the tag here due to the html block) to give iTunes the image URL for the cast.

There is no way right now to add in custom global tags like this yet, just custom post end tags.

Is there any chance of this happening in the future? I'll try sending you guys an email in addition to this comment.

Is there a way to modify the XML file?

Unless one can add tags for artwork, etc., as others have mentioned, being able to podcast through Blogger is essentially worthless.

Why not add such functionality into the post creation?

Hi, would be great to have the ability to record directly a video in your own blog with your webcam. Like facebook does (Video app), since flash allows to do this.. and the file wouldn't be huge to store on the blog itself.

For example, if you're on a trip and go to a cybercafe you can't always plugin your camera to put a video on your blog (or the connection could be very slow..). But you could use the webcam on that computer to post a little video.

Nim said...

I agree with Senior, uploading audio would be cool too. I know it sounds like we want everything on a plate but sometimes, I upload videos when it's really the soundtrack which is what I want playing.

Really cool blogger video player though. I like that it gives the whole thing a 'together' feel instead of having software from here there and any place.

i like the fact that blogger keeps adding new features and improving old ones. :)

i used mobile blogger to let me update a travel blog from my phone. the best feature was sending pics taken on my phone.

soon, i hope you will allow vid upload in the same fashion, so that video taken on mobile devices can be quickly uploaded to a blog. that would dovetail nicely with the video-podcasting advancement.

hope that made sense :)

Right now, my screen access software reads only numbers for the various buttons in the video player. Please add appropriate, descriptive labels to the buttons. Here's a link to Adobe's Flash best practices for Flash accessibility. Please employ some of these.

First the video does not show up in any rss feeds, ie RSS reader and on my Facebook profile.

Second, is that when I republish my blog after posting a comment (I have my blog hosted on my own space - because I don't want the navbar on it) it shows back up in my rss readers. I only have one post with a video added and it is the only one the "re"posts to my rss feed.

I just tested.

Conclusion:

This feature sucks!

Youtube embbeding is a lot better!

Why you can't just use it? It isn't from Google too?

I'm a sound designer by day and freelance radio journalist/print journalist by night (and nine years previous in Public Radio) I like he concept of adding the video player, which like one comment said, I create videos in Final Cut Pro by importing the audio and adding a few seconds of a jpeg image to the beginning and end. It's a great thing to use as an additional marketing tool. I also like one of the other comments above that I hop e happens on my site...listening to my "CDDocumentaries" while kicking back and reading some of the other music related material.

Shame it doesn't work from Picasa
When you select a video in picasa and click the blogger button it only send a picture of the video.

This force us to upload the photo from the blogger website and means extra clicks.

Also someone said it doesn't work with Google reader.
It works with me.

Blogger Video needs an audio track! If you do not have an audio track your video will not get past the "processing" stage. You don't need to have sound, an empty track will do.

Just thought I'd share.
